Thank in advance. Today I got a BSOD after waking up my comp from hibernate. I restarted the comp and got another screen asking to reboot and select proper boot device. I inserted my win cd and was not able to repair. I turned everything and checked the connections and tried again and the comp booted, but while it was booting with the windows logo, I noticed that it said resuming windows.

I was having a similar issue a couple weeks ago where it seemed like windows was trying to boot from another drive. I ended up unplugging it for the time being, but now I’m having a similar problem and need some assistance diagnosing the issue.

    My sys:

0xF4 bugchecks are frequently drive-related, as you have an SSD, I suggest you follow the generic 'lost' SSD advice here if it happens again.

Keep regularly updated backups/clones of your system drive + other valued data and learn how to use them.

Check for updated SSD firmware and check the SSD SMART stats.

You can also give BlueScreenView a try. It's a portable app; just unpack the ZIP file and run the EXE. If Windows had a chance to write a dump file before it crashed, then BlueScreenView will show you the list of files from the \Windows\MiniDump folder. Select the most recent file in the upper part of the window, then look in the lower part for the culprit(s). All programs/DLLs/drivers involved in the crash will be highlighted with a pink background. If a driver was implicated, check with the vendor to see if there's a newer version available.

According to ADATA's support site, the last firmware update for your drive is version 5.2.5, released 2014-07-17 (I assume that was installed a long time ago). If you haven't installed the ADATA SSD ToolBox, you might want to do that, then run "Drive Info" to check the drive's health and "Diagnostics" to check for problems.

Cheers...I'll give it a go. I haven't had the BSOD since, but I got "reboot and select proper boot device" x 2
    The blue screen shows
    ntoskrnl.exe ntoskrnl.exe+a1e69 fffff800`03016000 fffff800`035f3000 0x005dd000 0x5cb92db6 4/18/2019 7:08:54 PM Microsoft® Windows® Operating System NT Kernel & System 6.1.7601.24475 (win7sp1_ldr.190516-0600) Microsoft Corporation C:\Windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe

    Adata health is good.

Great, just the operating system kernel. Translation: Windows tripped over its own 2 big feet.

If it happens again, try these:

    1. Reseat the SATA cable on the motherboard and on the drive.
    2. Plug the SATA cable into a different port on the motherboard.
    3. Replace the SATA cable.

I got the black screen to reboot and select proper boot device again or insert media in selected boot device and press key. I followed sata cable instructions to no avail

I think I found the problem. It's booting from my dvd writer. I went into boot setting in bios but the is no list to set boot priority. Not sure what to do?

I found the boot list. Not sure how to set it up correctly.

Boot option#1 should be your System drive (P2 ADATA), unless the Active flag and/or Boot flag/partition are on a different drive.

Correct...I was finally able to set the boot option 1 to the adata drive and should the secondary drive be the dvd drive (Asus)? I tried to run the win cd to see if I could get the repair option using the disk but when I restart the pc it doesn't boot from cd

Did you follow the first suggestion from #2?

  19. clixto

    clixto Specialist

Yes, except the usb adaptor as I don't have and I don't have access to another comp. I reseeded sata cables and used diff ones. I checked all updates and firmware. It's up to date. The thing is, it's not just the primary OS drive. It not recognizing other drives and then it does. I have turn off power saving mode so it won't keep doing it for now. I DL'd #4 Adata toolbox and it is healthy.

Did you "reseat the drive and boot in to your system’s BIOS or UEFI with the drive connected normally for a minimum of five minutes to allow the drive to attempt this same rebuild, then reboot the system and see if the drive is restored."?

I remember unplugging and waiting 5 min, but can't remember if I booted in bios. I will do it again

Nothing changed. I’m unable to boot into windows. Bios not seeing the drive at the moment.

How would an OS reinstall fix a hardware/BIOS problem/misconfiguration?

When you get the drives showing correctly in the BIOS, do you then configure the Boot priority and Save the BIOS configuration?

Sorry, pardon my ignorance around comps. I did save it last time, but it keeps changing. Never had a problem with this since building this comp. It just started doing this a few weeks ago. I have left the comp on so it won't do it. If I turn it off or leave the power settings on, it will do it again.

Back to checking the CMOS battery is making good contact, and/or replacing it with a fresh one.

I'll check the connection again. I replaced it with a new one about a month ago. I'll respond tomorrow morn. I highly appreciate you taking time out of your day to help me with this. :)

I took out the battery and put it back in. I set and saved the boot priority. The date and time were off afterwards. I reset the date and internet time.

Should I be leaving all extra drives unplug during these checks? I’m getting these errors now, but it is loading windows at the moment.

Not much can be done about hardware failure; try to get the Adata recognised and booted, get any vital data copied over to another drive.

Setup the Samsung as the boot drive and disconnect the Adata, install Windows on the Samsung and see how that goes.

  33. clixto

So this is a failing SSD and not a MB issue?

  34. clixto

    clixto Specialist

Why would the adata toolbox say the drive is healthy?

  35. satrow

    satrow Major Geek Extraordinaire

Swapping out the System drive for the Samsung for testing purposes may give further clues as to where the problem lies.

Easiest to use your 'board CD if you have it.

Looks like USB2 should be functioning, if you can get access to a suitable device your ext. drive or a thumbdrive can be used, the drivers are here.

So we're likely looking at battery (again), PSU, CMOS (poss. user error/buggy or corrupt firmware?) or motherboard (traces/components).

Reset the BIOS to defaults, set the time, set the Boot order, Save and Exit - and check whether 'Secure boot' is enabled, it might need turning off to make some changes stick.

Should I use the original ssd or the Samsung to do this?

Whichever one you can get detected, the Adata would be my first choice.

I will purchase another battery tomorrow. I noticed the one I bought had a smooth surface bottom in comparison to the original that had a grid like bottom.

I think most of the better brands have a date stamp on the packaging now, take a loupe/linen tester, you may need the extra magnification to read it.
