The Apollo 11 Moonwalk was really something. Have thoroughly enjoyed watching coverage of this on TV and got a summary from the movie of NASA's "Apollo 11". Can't imagine how the families and wives must have felt dealing with their dad/husband flying to the Moon. But can imagine the relief and pride of their return.

Really something for America to be proud of. Absolutely fantastic what was achieved. If only the same could be applied to countries around the world achieving peace...that would be fantastic too:)

I clearly remember the moon landing because I was 14 years old and at Mount Waverley High School where on the day, most of the students and teachers were sent to the school assembly hall to watch the historic occasion unfold..........by today's AV standards it was a pretty grim affair.......about 1200 students from forms 1 to forms 6 plus most of the teachers were packed into the hall and trying to see one of the three 26" black and white TVs that were on stands on the stage........I had to wait until I got home from school to watch it on the news as the screens in the assembly hall were so small compared to the size of the audience and the picture quality was woeful by today's standards............Oh and i just remembered that as an added bonus they only had the three tiny TV speakers blurting out the commentary.....they were turned up to max volume because of the size of the hall and the sound coming out was all distorted and barely intelligible...........ah, those were the days

I was 8 years old. We had to listen to the radio. Television in South Africa was only introduced in 1976... o_O

    That's crazy!

I know we had black-and-white in '62. (at least that's when we could afford it). I was 5. I remember peeking through holes in a room divider curtain to watch shows when I was supposed to be sleeping. One night there was an eyeball staring back at me. What happened next would be illegal here today!

I was 21. I watched it with my parents on the only tv in the house, black and white and no cable nor remote controls.
I've enjoyed watching several programs this past week with archival film footage. I'm getting to see things we didn't see then as well as seeing it in color!

We had a black and white TV at time, so managed to see it...it was incredible even though the visual was very poor...would have been just as effective doing what you did...listening to it on radio, because the astronauts were describing what they were seeing, and letting our imaginations provide images;)

Ditto. Being the 50th Anniversary, they've provided a lot of footage, so for me it was a revelation to see so much first time (archival) footage.

That's what kids do...I used to sneak to the top of the stairs in the dark and watch TV when it was way past my bed time. Always got found out because I'd fall asleep on the stairs!:D

I've been trying to think, what has been so spectacular to capture the whole world's attention at the same time since that moon landing. Those were the days.:)

Interesting photos on Wiki page of 'Apollo 11 computer'. That's a bunch of code!

Gosh...the old days of writing code and their printouts...then IBM's PC. Remember moving away from code and into having fun putting together education packages with fun cartoons...short lived but a jump board to move into other projects. That was a good past era in a different life:)

I had a think and in my lifetime I think the moon landing was it and I was talking to my mother and she mentioned all the hype lately about the moon landing anniversary so I asked did she think this was the most significant world event.
She said that for her it was the Japanese surrender and the end of world war II. There was dancing in the streets all around the world because everyone knew their loved ones could return from the fighting and they were hoping that wartime food rationing would soon come to an end. This was well before my time but world war II involved so many countries around the world and it cost so much in lives and money........... so the end of the war must have been a significant world announcement ........

When I started playing with computers they were programmed using punched cards or punched paper or mylar tape and were very limited to the operations that could be performed........and the boot strap (equivalent to today's OS) code was initiated with 8 toggle switches and you had to set each program step manually and press the next step to proceed and some machines had over 100 lines of boot code so you would spend an hour setting the switches for each program step only to find it wouldn't boot because you had made a mistake somewhere and have to start again:mad:.........crikey it is a real memory trip today:)

It would be an amazing number if we could put a byte count on what's stored and available in our heads!

I remember it well. I was 29 and in my residency training for OB-Gyn in Houston. Houston was abuzz with all the publicity and activity around the Space Center at the time. The astronauts were like gods. Revered for having the Right Stuff.

    I was -6, lol

I remember turning the dial to orient the aerial antenna on the roof. In my day, we had channels 2,5,8,11,13,20, and sometimes 30,55,and 61 if you tuned the aerial proper.

That's a lot of channels with an antenna.

We had 3 channels: ABC, CBS and NBC. Channels didn't broadcast all day. The anthem was played around midnight and then the test pattern came on until programming resumed.
