I shut it down before going to bed last night. Just turned it back on and nothing came on the screen! Absolutely nothing! It's just BLACK! What do I do?!

Do you have a TV that you can run a cable to and see if it recognizes your laptop?

No. I just tried that. The TV's not picking up the signal.

When I hook up....I have to restart the laptop.

How can I restart? I don't know how to do that safely.

Someone on another forum just suggested it may be hibernation freeze. They said I should try a forced shutdown, unplug from the wall socket, and restart, and if the screen comes on this time, I should disable the computer's sleep and hibernation settings because they cause a lot of problems. I don't know whether I should try their suggestion because I don't know whether they think that I'd put the computer into hibernation and now it just isn't properly coming out of it. I hadn't put it into hibernation, though. I'd completely shut it down.

I'm posting now from the laptop. I pressed and held down the power button until the computer shut off. Then I unplugged it. Pressed the power button again and this time the screen did come on. Underneath the Asus logo, it said Updating your system. Then a blue screen with Configuring Windows updates. Then the lock screen, I hit the Enter key, typed in my password, the dots spun around in a circle for a few seconds, and then the computer booted normally to the desktop. Could it have possibly been a Windows Update issue?

It was most likely an update issue. Sometimes a computer will shutdown and restart a few times. All normal. Let it do its thing,DONT switch off or try to restart With updates patience is a virtue, mine has just finished 1903 and it took most of the afternoon.

You're born worrier Jesse, just sit back and relax.

I would definitely say it as a stuck update- I have seen it happen.
Doing the hard shutdown was a way of recovering . Otherwise ctrl/alt/delete buttons can usually allow a restart, and Windows will most of the time recover to update -I understand this problem came with some updates, and only affected some systems.
