windows 7 and 8 are terrible now...windows 7 used to seem the best or OK but now pretty bad and win 8 always was bad

do you have to pay for upgrade?

do most people always think someone has planted Trojans or viruses? and just give up and redo the computer?

if i want to send one email ill spend 35 minutes doing nothing-its incredible

i guess ill turn on wireless and use the 100 dollar smart pad

Even the best of the original netbooks will struggle with the leanest stripped down W7 install, max 1.5-2GB RAM and a decent SSD (though boot up might be extremely rapid), those old Atom CPUs are rubbish, the Intel graphics is worse.

Yes, a compatible x86 Linux distro would be a better alternative.

If you are used to windows operating system then I would suggest using Linux Mint on the netbook as it's easy to adapt to.

Why fret? There is a right type of Linux for every machine. The Linux devs are thinking of people when they design the software, and the result is way better than even 5 years ago (and it was pretty good then). If you go for it, let us know. Different versions will give you different abilities...

For typical hardware (8 GB/i5 2nd gen), I can say this: Linux Manjaro with its rolling updates is far better to me than Windows 10 with all the spyware and so on. W7 won't survive much longer the way it's being treated. The software written for Linux is really extraordinarily good now too, and the distros are being well managed...:)

More and more of the 'enterprise' (the ones with some real backing / developement) level Linux distros are dumping x86 support from what I've been seeing.

I wanted to say that my desktop is a 2008 Motherboard which came with 4GB memory. Long may she last.
Works perfectly with Windows 10 1903 64bit. It's feeling very happy. Latest update no problems.

A lot of netbooks don't have DVD drives. It has nothing to do with the age of the netbook. It has everything to do with making them thinner and lighter and more portable.
We have 3 netbooks in the house with no optical drives. It isn't a problem because they have sd slots. It is much easier to put several DVDs on an sd card and carry them with you instead of carting around DVDs.

I rarely burn DVDs. I simply rip the contents to an mp4 file (sometimes avi) and put the file in several places for archiving.

The upgrade method to Windows 10 still works from activated Windows 7, 8/.1, they just don't publicise it anymore. However I agree with Linux for Netbook also, depending on which Distro you install it will be a much better experience as W10 is still so... 'BETA'.

Intel E4300 is Conroe 65nm, by todays standards Windows 10 would eat that 1.80Ghz for breakfast, imo.

I have ZERO issues with windows 7...

But i can not stand using Windows 10 I wish it would die off.

I could care less about windows w7 updates after 2020...It will still run better then windows 10 any day.

I couldn't agree more. Windows 7 is a brilliant OS. But I had to upgrade to Windows 10 for photo editing software purposes.
