Ccleaner Vs Wise Care 365 (free) Vs ????

I’ve used CCleaner for as long as I can remember.

When I was rebuilding our Vista PC after a crash, I was re-installing CCleaner, when something flagged that it was trying to install ‘Web Companion’ on the sly.

That didn’t feel right to me, so after a quick look round I installed Wise Care 365 (free)

After completing all the Vista updates, I replaced a free trial of McAfee with Avast (uninstall, reboot, ran the McAfee removal tool for Vista, reboot, install Avast, reboot) and all seemed ok.

I then ran the Wise Care ‘PC checkup’, clicked ‘Fix’ and switched the PC off.

Next morning it wouldn’t boot, but restored from a previous point.

I went through it all again regarding McAfee/Avast and it all seems ok, but I am not sure whether I trust Wise Care now.

I’d appreciate any thoughts you have about this, including any better alternatives (other than saying ‘don’t use Vista’, ‘use Linux’ etc etc)

    Cheers.

Is the Vista PC capable of running Windows 10?
I ask that running Win10 on a pc I bought running XP.
Of course you will need a licence but there are offers to find...

I am just throwing this response out there. 4GB RAM and SSD drive.
    Good luck with your journey,

I avoid cleaners like the plague! Why? They generally do more harm that good. If you use a decent removal program like Revo Uninstaller or Geek Uninstaller that looks over the registry and offers you the chance to clean those entries, you don't have to use a cleaner.

I do have an old version of CCleaner before the company was sold to Avast (July 2017) and now comes bundled with things I neither want nor need. If you feel you have to have it, find a pre-July 2017 version. CCleaner gets updated monthly which is ridiculous. How long ago was Vista updated? That should tell you that you don't need a monthly update for CCleaner. Your OS hasn't changed so the old cleaner should still be effective.

Both are good programs but Wise has more features than CCleaner. But I don't use them as I use Iobit Uninstaller to remove my software and it deletes all registry keys and files.

I suspect that was down to the site you got the CCleaner installer from. It doesn't happen if you download from the author's site or from here at MG. Also, you do need to select a custom install rather than just clicking Install as many program installers will try to install something in addition to the program you want. Choosing custom allows you to deselect anything you don't want.

Can't help with your boot failure - sorry.

    Thanks all.

No, it won’t run Win 10

The machine is ok now, the only difference during the second run was that I didn’t use Wise Care at the end, hence the question.

I'll think things over, meanwhile I'm not going to be cleaning anything and see what happens

    Cheers.

I dumped CCleaner for Wise Disk Cleaner over a year ago. The Wise program removes a lot more leftover crud from my drive and doesn't mess with the registry. I haven't had any issues with it.

At least you should clean your browser caches from time to time. They can get huge and slow your browsing too. Windows has Disk Cleanup built in, try that. Third party cleaners aren't necessary but can be useful imo.

Windows Disk Cleanup only covers Microsoft's stuff. Third-party cleaners cover non-Microsoft apps like Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Adobe Reader and Flash Player, etc.

That's what I meant by 'third party cleaners can be useful'.

The standard Wise Disk Cleaner program seems safe to use. It finds things CCleaner doesn't find. Not sure about 365. I use both it and CCleaner on the laptop here. I have studied the cleaners and Windows fairly intensively over the years, so I added CCEnhancer:

    https://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/ccenhancer.html

This is a cool little hidden app that adds alot of functionality to CCleaner. It is helpful to get a look at all that COULD be deleted, but I only remove a fraction of what is offered by CCEnchancer for the browsers.

I've never had an issue with CCleaner adding anything to a browser, although Comodo says it wants to change browser settings. I always interpreted that to refer to it normally by its design deleting cache files and other user data. I have had AppCheck Anti-Ransomeware quarantine it before but that was just again for deleting files. Fixed that with an exclusion.

As for Plodr's comment, at default settings she is really correct. I use the cleaners to be able to remove all kinds of temporary files and then custom (user added locations) files where logs pile up, etc. I don't clean the registry. I estimate that using a cleaner conservatively and safely saves me 5-10 GB of disk space. Feels way better to use a clean system for me...

One sneaky option in CCleaner is the 'Inform me of updates to CCleaner'.

Even if you uncheck this, CCleaner will still check for updates because it creates a task.

Don't delete the task because it will be recreated.
    Disable it.

Sorry this is a little off topic but if you are looking for a good browser cleaner than I would recommend Privacy Eraser you can download it right here at majorgeeks. It's a very powerful tool for cleaning purposes too and it also does the same things as wise cleaner and CCleaner does.
