I've just upgraded from w7 to w10 using the media creation tool , it took a couple of hours including the updates etc.

It all seems to be fine, no probs so far I've kept all my bookmarks, my squeezebox and pi are all well, great.

However, it doesnt seem to have changed my hard disk usage,I have 302gb free out of 500gb, which I am sure is the same as before. Why is this ?

if all is well and fine, and all of your data is there and usable, and you don't have any problems with any of your programs, i would just thank the computer gods for a successful upgrade. yes, upgrading to win10 should have used disk space, and i'm sure it did, but microsoft might have used smoke and mirrors to perform some magic in how it calculates disk space. the only thing to check would be to see if the upgrade kept the win7 system files and squirreled them away somewhere. if not, then that is probably the answer to your question. good luck with it.

Did you run a disk clean-up after the upgrade? If not:
    1. Launch File Explorer.
    2. Click on "This PC".
    3. Right-click on your C: drive and select "Properties".
    4. Click on "Disk Cleanup". Wait until it finishes.
    5. Click on "Clean up system files".Wait until it finishes.
    6. Select everything on the list, maybe skipping Downloads if you want to keep files in there. Note: If you tell it to clean up the old Windows setup, you won't be able to roll back to Windows 7.
    7. Click on "OK".
    8. Confirm that you want to delete the selected files.
Now check your disk usage and see how much space is available.

I used to do a defrag regularly, years ago . Never did one on my current desktop in 5 years ie the one I've just upgraded. It seems all my old files are still there ie mp3 music, photos etc and they are all backed up as always. Some folders are there maybe with name changes I'm not sure, I'll have a closer look in the next few days or so as I am on the learning curve.

It has uninstalled MSE and CCleaner but it told me it was doing that at the time

How much disk space is it likely to have taken up for windows 10 ? Bearing in mind I presume some folders would just be recycled

My Windows folder is 17.7 GB.

SSD's tend to find defragging offensive.

    But still does the job.
Defragging an SSD does nothing but wear out the NAND faster. Most defrag programs will check if the target is an SSD and warn you not to do a defrag. Even Windows 10 picks this up: the "optimize" function defrags a hard drive but TRIMs an SSD.

at the moment, it has gone down to 297gb. I have copied most of the windows 10 folders to a portable drive backup and they use 10.7 gb.

Can I ask the best way to make a backup of my system please, while everything is new. I haven't defragged it or anything yet

probably a stupid question, but should I set up One Drive for security protection, what exactly is one drive ?
