Update: While waiting for my new power adapter..using my wife's computer....on Opera.....5 tabs open....locked up!! Mouse became ineffective, could not get into task manager....77% memory usage. 4 Gig Ram. She has never complained about this....so maybe it is me???

Look at the 5 tabs that were open. Perhaps one of those is causing the problem.
If you remember what they were, cut down to 4 and see if it freezes. If it freezes, you have found the site. If it doesn't freeze, use that but pick another to not load.

I was on Politifact....been there often without freezing.....this last time the little circle (loading) just kept spinning. After a restart of the browser, the site was fine. It has been so random, I haven't been able to pin point any specific event.

    It's not PolitiFact.
Currently have it open with two other tabs and total RAM usage is 1.15 GB.

Timw do you have advanced systemcare installed if you do try going to speed up tab and turn on turbo boost to see if that solves the problem.

    Eldon...73% memory usage .... Opera using 430 MB's. 6 tabs open.
Andy...will see about that when I get back on my computer.

Tim, considering you have this problem with all browsers, it has to be Windows 10.

    Windows 7 - Firefox 68.4.2esr- 1 Tab open.
    RAM_2.jpg

    Windows 7 - Firefox 68.4.2esr - 10 Tabs open (different sites).
    RAM_3.jpg

    Firefox has 10 extensions & 3 plugins.
The memory usage is total, not just Firefox.

@Eldon - I agree. I have an old E8400 core2 Duo, 8 gigs of ram and a middling Mifi wireless. Use opera all the time and plenty times with 4,5 or 6 tabs open. Win 7, 64 bit.
    Never have a problem.

After I saw your post last night, I went to Politifact. Read a few of their items. Then to Google News's front page. Bounced thru some of their news articles. Got curious of some things and opened another tab to look up different info, leaving all these tabs open while I browsed. Went back and forth a few times over the course of a couple hours. On this old machine and Win7, never had a problem.

If one of the sites your visiting is causing problems, I don't think it's 'Politifact'. ;)

It is the same as my wifes! I believe it is somewhere in Window 10 code or background crap. If someone is using Win 10 and not experiencing this memory usage, I would love to know.

    They're still running.

It's difficult to compare PCs with different memory amounts installed, Windows will use more memory as the installed amount rises, less memory pressure = more used.

Then there's differences in the Services running to account for, before moving to background Process effects, differences in Plugins/Addons in the running browser(s), 'bitness' differences (x86 uses ~20% less than x64).

With W10, it might be added background stuff hanging over from previous sessions as well - by default it uses a hybrid Quick Start - fresh user data + saved System data from the previous session(s). 120+Processes is ridiculous, how much of that default install do you actually use?

try this to see if helps with memory usage.
    • Hit Win Key + R
    • Type in “Regedit” and then hit Enter.
    • Go to ‘HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management’
    • Find ‘ClearPageFileAtShutDown’ and change its value to 1
    • Restart the computer.
This is for windows 10 only.

    • Clean your PC using a trusted antivirus
    • Update the faulty and outdated drivers
    • Disable Runtime Broker to fix high CPU and memory usage
      • Go to Start menu > Settings app and then open System > Notifications & Actions. Deselect the option “Show me tips about Windows” and reboot the computer.

I already have notifications turned off under system. I changed the reg key....so will reboot....BRB.

Rebooted and still...one tab open and 58% usage.

I see Avast browser crash handler running.why oh why are you using avast.I all so see kaspersky as well.kaspersky is taking up at least 10% of your cpu.And a little bit of ram.Avast and AVG are the same company now.

Wile......I am trying a ton of browsers to see which us the least ram......I am well aware that AVG and AVAST are combined. That isn't the issue. :)

Ok let's try some thing in firefox or waterfox.

In both firefox and waterfox in the Tool/Options section Go to General Tab section should be the first section selected. When firefox or waterfox is first started up it uses Multi-Processes for what ever reason. It run's fine on both Single and Multi on higher powered systems. But in the past some times i had to switch Multi to single for lower ends. All that needs done with this is uncheck Enable multi-process.Then restart browser.I think a lot of these browsers are using way to many multi-process for what reason i don't know.

You still have the same amount of ram most likely being used but it will all be put into a single process instead of being spread out among 5 or 6 processes which can some times take more ram then a single process.

    Edit

If you are willing to go into about:config in firefox or waterfox there are some settings that can be adjusted for memory usage .

Type “about:config” in your browser and set the following options from the list appeared.

Integer is numbers and boolean is true or false settings.
You might have to add some of these items in your self if they are not listed. All you need to do is
is right click on a white section empty. In the new tab select New interger or boolean
    1. Browser.cache.memory.capacity –> set to 0
    2. Browser.tabs.animate –> disable ( I don't have this setting Wile )
    3. Javascript.options.jit.chrome –> set to true (Nope)
    4. Javascript.options.jit.content –> set to true (Nope)
    5. Network.http.pipelining –> set to true (Nope)
    6. Network.http.proxy pipelining –> set to true (Nope)
    7. Plugin.expose_full_path –> set to true (All ready is )
    Then download this below.

Hey TimW. I studied the rising memory issue for about 3 or 4 years off and on, testing some browsers. I found that even a really powerful system would completely freeze within 8 days, even with 8 gigs of RAM with heavy use of a browser. The worst was Chrome. However, I wouldn't be surprised if Edge was pretty bad. Never tested it. Vivald seems to be the best to me.

OK, well, I am using Vivaldi on all my home PCs, and I have 3 PCs that I use here mainly. It's smooth as glass and seems to be good with memory generally. One very cool trick I learned was to use a program called Firemin. It can be found here:

    https://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/firemin.html

This is meant for Firefox. It knocks the RAM memory way down. The great thing is that you can add any process you want to the list to be trimmed. FF will automatically be trimmed if it's running, so it doesn't need to be added. I have added svchost.exe and sevices.exe with no issues. Also, you can add browsers like chrome or edge, etc. The very best part of this app is that you can adjust how often the program works and then how much it cuts the RAM. I have it set to cut anything over 50 mb every 60 (60,000 ms) seconds. However, this program won't hurt anything, even at its aggressive settings. I've been using this for over 3 years, and it works really well for me. With my timings in Firemin, Firefox can be pretty good. I actually like FF, but it does use RAM almost like Chrome.

Here are my stats for Vivaldi. It's really good.

    Vivaldi memory usage.gif

Browsers don't add any top end memory protection to the system as it nears a freeze. As the browsers use more and more memory over time, there isn't much of anything (if anything) to sensibly trim the browsers. That's because Windows doesn't do that either. FF seems to do this to itself when system memory is like 85-90%, but that is too late to stop a freeze too many times. At any rate, Firemin takes no prisoners. Experiment and have fun. Seriously, it won't hurt anything. I have run it on the 100 and 250 ms settings for long periods. Hope this helps some.

EDIT: btw I just realized I never added Vivaldi to the Firemin list for trimming, so Vivaldi's low numbers are without the trimming happening. It does seem a good bit smoother than the others. This is almost 50 tabs open too. I do use a tab sleeping extension called "The Great Suspender". It removes tab data from RAM after a while when the tab is not in use. Helps a good bit. That would definitely be something to look into too imo...

Wile...I went all thru that with the Waterfox developer...happened in both multi and single process mode.

AtlBo.....Vivaldi to be added now along with Wile's link to Firemin.....but are you saying it will work with Vivaldi as well?

  44. AtlBo

    AtlBo Major Geek Extraordinaire

Yes, Firemin can be configured to trim Vivaldi's memory:

    Firemin setup.gif

It will trim literally anything you add. Works well for me trimming svchost.exe and services.exe, along with FF and chrome. As mentioned, I haven't bothered with Vivaldi, since it hasn't been an issue, but if I had 4 GB instead of 8 I probably would have added it already...

Sounds like old cryptominer links. Do you use anything like uBlock Origin? It works well on Vivaldi here and will block crypto sites (even if they are at a redirect site). Maybe it would block whatever is causing the processor to race that way on your laptop. There are some links I add to uBO for extra block hosts. I can give those out if anyone would like them. Picked them up on Malwaretips...
