System Restore often only shows the last restore point, but usually has a link to 'Show more restore points'. Have another look.

    I've been looking. Sorry- it's Win 8.1
After I hit 'system restore"teh pop up gives me yesterday to restore to, the only link is 'scan for affected files'
There is a 'create a restore point' (on the pop up with the 'system restore' button)but then it asks for a description of teh restore point. HOw do I fill that out? write out the date? Use slashes??like 3/3/20.
I want to do restore before I do a defrag. Computer keeps crashing.

It's for you, should you want later to restore this point, to note the key points about the system at that point in time. It isn't relevant to your present problem of wanting to restore to an earlier point.

Ok, so I can't use create restore point to restore to an earlier time? i can only go back 1 day? Will a defrag help stop my computer form crashing?
    Thanks.

OK. I researched a little on these terms. Is this download easier to use than doing a file check from Windows? And I won't lose any files or programs/apps?

The utility saves a log file to the Desktop. You can upload it.
And no, you won't lose any files.

But it does a file check & repair? Easy to use? I should also say that I haven't allowed Windows updates for a long time because everytime it updated, something else went wrong & we sure as F don't want Windows 10, though I did go in & delete that update file.
So is this utility ging to just fix files, or will it do updates?

The utility will check for pending updates and prompt you to install them.

SFC does attempt to find and fix errors with system files but quite often it can't. This is because there are also errors in the stored image it is referring to. When this happens you can use DISM to audit and correct the image before running SFC again, when it will usually succeed. SFC is safe and easy to use and should be in everyone's toolkit.

I ran it & it said that it fixed all the files. You recommend installing the Windows updates now?

Wait and see whether it's still crashing. If it is we have to find and fix the cause first. Chances are it's a driver. I would run Iobit's Driver Booster. If you haven't been updating it will find a lot of outdated drivers but don't get impatient with it, update drivers one at a time and see if it's OK.
