What laptop is using W7 ?
Check power options- set laptop to never sleep,- never turn off screen, and don't use hibernate - use a screensaver- the bubbles one would do.

I do remember that there was a problem with hibernation in Windows 7, but can only suggest to check if an update caused it, is there a bios update for yours that might have been made for this, any graphics driver Problem.
If you go to device driver, are there any yellow triangles against anything- Have a look in event viewer- I have seen kernal problems show up.

Control Panel, Power Options. In the left column select Choose what the power buttons do.
On my Windows 7 laptop, I don't have an option to wake the computer up.
My choices are: Do nothing, Sleep, Hibernate and Shut Down.

Did it used to work in Windows 7 by pressing the power button? I haven't had much luck finding solutions for Windows 7 using the power button to wake from sleep.

I suspect you can't wake a computer up by using the power button under Windows 7. That's why it isn't given as an option to do so.

Well we have two Win 7 laptops and we have never attempted to wake them by using the power button. (One was purchased in 2011 and the other in 2013). No issue to wake by either using the keyboard or a mouse.

To be honest, I always shut mine down when not using it- does not give me problems - but everyone likes their own vibe.
I just remember those years ago when it happened to me, and that was why I always disabled it- I still do in w7, 8.1, and w10 -No problems-just let screensaver come on after 15 minutes of no use, if I leave it on. Also, less fire risk- laptops can get hot,and I would rather know that I turned it off.
