I've discovered a similar named folder in the user folder on my HP. This is not an often used computer, so it took awhile to realize it.

Specs: HP desktop, 64 bit, Win 10. I want to rename Jeff.OOO and remove the OOO. The similar named folder of Jeff_old contains some remnants of Zune (nothing else), which I just uninstalled today in an attempt to clean things up, and then renamed to Jeff_old. The install of Zune, and the unwanted folder creation seemed to occur on the same date.

See the screen prints, where I can right click and rename any other user, but that rename function does not exist for Jeff.OOO.

I would like to rename as noted above, and then delete Jeff_old.

    Thoughts?

Whoops on the failure to upload the screenshot, its now attached. plodr, thanks for the education. Does the fact that its a folder and not a file extension make a difference?

To hopefully prevent you from possibly damaging your user accounts can you please open Control Panel > User Accounts and post a pic please. I ask because renaming Windows user accounts is not possible.

Just start typing Control in Start to get access to Control Panel and select Small Icons.

I went searching to see if folders/directories have extensions and found 1 such folder Found.000.

Since your's is named something different, I'm not sure what to make of it.

Ah, one of the Windows 10 updates apparently logs people in as a temp user. That username.000 folder/directory contains ALL your files.

Very long thread about it here: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us...nd-holds/06636b30-9838-4c5e-b236-dc1d06f2f175

Since this is dealing with protected system files and user files OP better backup all of their personal files and folders before doing anything.

I think Windows creates the 000 folder when you go from using a local unsecured account to signing in to Windows with a Microsoft account. There are instructions but again back up anything you do not want to lose just in case. Renaming a User Account Does Not Automatically Change the Profile Path

Microsoft is doing this because it wants to abandone signing in with a Local Account.

And it's pretty frustrating. The last time I did a fresh install there was no option to log in to a local account. The only way to proceed was to sign into my MS account. You spend however long installing Windows and setting up the account only to have MS change the user profile without your permission.

That was because your system has a digital certificate, i.e. your system was activated by the MS servers which recognised your hardware. If you do a clean install from a retail source you will get the choice of local or MS account.

I'm pretty sure the ID is tied to the motherboard. I installed a new SSD and was forced to use my MS account.

I'm using a laptop which previously was my wife's, and the main user account is in her name. I'm currently trying the procedure in your #7 to change that. It it succeeds I unreservedly withdraw my post #5 and this will confirm the correct procedure for the OP.

I have never tried it. It sounds pretty simple and that usually means it is anything but simple!

Seems it's not a straightforward situation unfortunately so unable to follow through with that procedure. Recommend OP tries it nonetheless.

    That figures...

If the name and file names are bothersome then what I did last time was create a new admin account with the name I want then make the old admin account a standard user and then delete it. You obviously have to set up a new user account and also import your personal files from a backup. It's almost like doing a fresh install without the install process.
