Windows Not Updating

I have a problem with updating Windows. It just does not seem to update.

I was looking at the Update page wondering what I could do and noticed where it says Pause Updates. I wondered if some option had been clicked and it was preventing updates.

So, I clicked on Pause Updates thinking a number of options would come up. Of course it did not. It simply paused updates for seven days.

Am I right that I cannot undo this choice? I am unable to find a way of doing so. It seems ridiculous that you cannot change your mind and select to not have updates paused.

If I cannot undone this choice I shall just have to wait seven days before I can address the problem. Who knows updates may even work when the seven days expires.

If you've paused updates then the 'Check for updates' button should now be labeled 'Resume updates'.

Thanks for answering my question, _nullptr.

I'd have thought it would give such an option but it doesn't as can be seen in the attached screen shot.

There haven't been many updates for Win 10 for the last month or two. What is showing in update history? A pic would be good.

I realised a pic would be good after post #2 so have attached one in post #3. I'm attaching a different one here of update history. I don't know if it helps because it looks very uninformative to me.

This is what the Update and Security screen should look like

Try running the following commands from an elevated command prompt (or powershell) and see if things get fixed.
    Code:
    SFC /Scannow
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

    Restart the computer when finished.

I tried powershell because I do not know how to get to elevated command prompt. In powershell it told me I had to be an administrator to use SFC. I am an administrator so I don't know why it said that. For the avoidance of doubt I checked in settings and I am definitely the administrator.

Could you please tell me how to get to elevated command prompt?

I would like to know about the code. Do I type SFC /Scannow then press enter and wait for something to happen and afterwards type Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and press enter? Or will typing SFC /Scannow then pressing enter allow me to then type in the second line of code?

    Thank you.

Right click the start button and from the popup menu select 'Windows Powershell (Admin)'
Type sfc /scannow and press enter, let it do its thing and repeat for the second command.

I will leave you to press on with _nullptr's commands but please be certain you have not set for updates to be deferred in Advanced Options. _nullptr's commands have to be run separately. Type cmd in search and select to run as Administrator.

    A change in the situation.

After post #7 (yesterday) I was unable to further work on this issue.

This morning I checked to see if I had a response to post #7, which I did, thank you _nullptr. I also saw post #9 from Earthling so I went to check if I had set updates to be deferred in Advanced Options. I had not.

However, I noted that I had got the option I should have, which is to Resume Updates. So, I clicked on it and it started updating. The machine is a laptop and I wanted to move rooms and without thinking I automatically closed down the screen. Then thought oops or words to that effect. When I opened the screen back up the laptop wouldn't come back to life. So, I did a forced power off.

After leaving it a few minutes I switched it back on and when I did rather than go to the log in screen it updated. Once I did get logged in and checked Updates it said my PC was up-to-date and updates had last been checked for today.

Therefore, because of circumstances I haven't carried out the recommended procedure in post #6. I am happy to do it if you think it is still necessary. Should I do it?

I do so hate it when you're made out to be a liar, especially by inanimate objects.
