Hehehehe.........I of course was transitioned back to my PCP....who told me the only surgery she passed out in was the knee surgery. She said the sounds of a "construction" crew using circular saws, hammers and chisels, drills etc, was too much for her knowing all this was not a building but a human!! :)

UPDATE: It is now 4 weeks after the surgery. Have run out of PT so doing things at home to keep the knee "lubricated". But feel I have passed a milestone. First day I awoke from a relatively pain free night. Little stiffness and walking to the living room was almost normal like! :)
Still feels like a huge foot has been shoved into a tiny sock.
Pretty much have abandoned the walker and crutches.

Now let's hear from Joffa!!!! Still in our prayers ya old codger!!

So if anyone has been sitting on an infected computer....I'm BACK!!!! LOL

Thanks Tim and sounds like you are really winning the battle.
I am really pleased it has turned out so well for you and after only four weeks you have got rid of the walker and crutches.....bravo (small hand clap) :D:cool:

    Now for my news :(
It has gone from bad to worse.......due to the backlog of elective surgery due to CoVid I now have to start physiotherapy and fail the exercises so a report can be written saying I definitely need to see an orthopaedic surgeon and then I can get an appointment.....so it is a crap system but everyone is getting the same treatment :(

Now for the more bad news:(.....read this with a coffee or maybe a beer at hand ;)

We were going to the physio and were given their address according to the National Medical Directory Database run by the College of Surgeons (I believe) and this has the current details of every licenced medical practitioner in Australia. The address turned out to be where they used to be and is now a vacant block with a new building about to be built. Luckily we were 15 minutes early so I rang the people and they said they had moved at the end of last year and hadn't updated their practitioner licence details yet. She gave me the new address and it was only a couple of streets away so we had time to make it easily for the appointment. We went to the new address and my wife drove a couple of shops past the clinic and pulled into the kerb as there was a car behind her. The car ended up pulling in behind our car but there wasn't enough room for him to park and he was blocking the road. There was nobody coming up behind the other car so my wife started a u turn and suddenly a car turned left through the traffic lights behind the car that was parking and pulled around him and into the side of our Volvo V50 T6 AWD wagon. She didn't see us and we didn't see her so nobody hit the brakes and she hit our car at 50kph. The accident damage was extensive to the Mitsubishi with the front wheels pushed to the firewall but my wife drove the Volvo home as it seemed not too bad.
The impact was very sharp and knocked my wife's glasses off and they went flying straight to the passenger footwell.....on the full
Looks can be deceiving and when insurance assessed the damage they said the car would need to go on a full body jig to straighten the body as there was heavy damage on the "B" pillar and the "A" pillar and the roofline had moved about 25mm so they said it was too much work and going to be too expensive so it was written off:(
Meanwhile we are out front of the physio and only three minutes late when the receptionist called and cancelled my appointment :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad: I said I had been waiting three weeks to see someone and I could walk straight in as we are only two shop doors up the street and exchanging licence details after an accident but she said no I have already cancelled your appointment and it will be rescheduled in a couple of weeks :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad: I pointed out that if they had updated their Practitioner Licence details then we wouldn't be in this position and I would be 15 minutes early and we wouldn't have had the accident. Her reply "Oh well don't bother calling us.....we will call you when we have an appointment time.....now it might be in a month or two":mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:
I went back to my GP who has now reported them to the College of Surgeons and I will make a formal complaint to the Victorian Medical Board so at least they will get a reprimand....... but of course the reality is they will only get a slap on the wrist and carry on regardless.:(:(:rolleyes:
So now I am looking for a low mileage Volvo XC60 T6 AWD SUV and I want either the R Design model or the Teknik model as these were the ones with all the options....sadly there are not many for sale as the people who own them tend to hang onto them until they are clapped out which is about 500,000kms.

My GP found me a new local Physio and I hope to see them late next week but as of midnight (last night) a lot of my state is now under full lockdown due to the resurgence of CoVid............seems like nothing is going my way at the moment :(:(........oh well I have been sitting around playing Fallout 76: Wastelanders and my character is now nearly at level 50 so at least there is that :)
Stay safe and healthy MG

Gezz.....this is eerily familiar!!! My time from first diagnosis of the arthritis tearing up my meniscus to having the operation was almost two years. And right before my first operation was scheduled, some twit opened her car door and damaged our truck. After months of back and forth with her insurance company, their bottom line was "F*ck You ...sue us!!

And I do think I told you about all the screw ups that my surgeons staff made. Giving me wrong info, neglecting to inform the surgeon of my inquires....on and on.

I was seriously pondering asking the Surgeon to put my old parts back in.....but the 4th week seems to be a turning point. :)

Are you having to use any assistive gear...crutches or a walker? Does a knee brace help you?

    Still in our thoughts!!

Thanks again Tim and no I don't really need crutches or a walker. My leg can take full weight on the joint provided I don't turn or twist or lean as it is unstable and may separate. The pain comes when I lift my foot off the ground. The pain is caused by the weight of my lower leg and foot causing the knee joint to separate as the tendons aren't giving any support to hold the bones together. I have a bandage below my knee and above my knee as well as a tube-e-grip bandage over everything to prevent swelling and deep vein thrombosis. I leave the kneecap floating as the kneecap is not the problem and not even sore.
Once I see the orthopaedic surgeon and depending on the timeframe for the operation, I will probably get a custom kneebrace made. The brace will cost about AU$1200 and is not covered so it will be my cost and I don't want to be spending this sort of money when it won't be needed after the operation. If the operation is going to be late next year I will get the brace made so I can get back to a more normal existence.

Yeah...that was kinda like the choices given me....do another meniscus scrape ( as was first done on the other - inside - ligament. ) Or wait until the pain and the inconvenience was enough to have it done. So, I didn't see the point of another scrapping if it would only delay the operation for a while and cost money we didn't have as disposable at the time.

I have a knee brace from long ago....next time I venture down to the bedroom, I will find it and take a pic and show you.....I have no use for it. $1200.....yeah.... no way!!

The one they are saying I should get is a custom fit made of carbon fibre and kevlar and after they measure you up they send you back home and then a week later it is time for the fitting and any fine tuning. The reason mine is expensive is because most people need a brace to stop sideways motion but the one I need has to be setup so it stops the knee joint from separating when I lift my leg.
A picture would be great Tim and feel free to send the picture in a pm.

Just a sidenote........ today when I lifted my leg over the shower door track (about 2" high) it hardly hurt.........I haven't had any pain killers for nearly 2 weeks and usually when I get out of the shower the knee gives me some grief........I reckon if I wait long enough and do nothing to hurt it further then by the time I get to see the surgeon, it might be nearly healed although if this was the case it wouldn't be strong like it was before the snap............they say patience is a virtue but I think trying to be patient in these difficult circumstances is a real test of character

My dad had a saying and it was "Life is a shit sandwich and on the good days the bread is really thick but on the bad days the bread is really thin" so I just hope for days when the bread is really thick ;)

Probably the best thing you can do is to stay off it as much as possible. ( Still looking for the damn brace...arrrgghh!! )

  13. joffa

joffa Major Geek's Official Birthday Announcer

Yeah good advice Tim......and a solid excuse for sitting playing Fallout 76 ........I tried a brace made of wetsuit like material that you put your foot in and slide it up the leg but these are more for restricting sideways motion and locating the kneecap but they don't really stop leg extension when the foot is lifted and the knee joint is holding the weight of the lower leg and foot. Oh well the pain is becoming less each day and it is now about two weeks since I have needed Endone so this is pleasing:cool:
Don't stress if you can't find the brace as I am sure the physio will have access to a good range of off the shelf and custom braces if needed :)

Two family members had full knee reconstruction - one through damage from competitive squash and tennis for years, the other - just wear and tear following constant falls...very painful procedure, needing patience for rehab until strength returns...never quite the same.

So, be kind to yourself, be patient, and enjoy the attention when finally after the op...particularly from pretty medical staff;)

I've been thinking of you guys after reading about your woes.
Ironically, my sister-in-law had an accident at home about a month ago that broke her knee cap.
She had surgery a couple of days later and is still wearing a brace that does allow some slight bending at the knee.

About a year ago, I had an incident similar to what happened with TimW. After getting up one night, as older men regularly do, I passed out, fell and fractured one or two ribs. No x-rays were taken since there is no remedy available.

I joined this forum in May, 2007, just a week or so after a more serious accident.
The injury I had is often referred to as 'a broken hip', but is often a broken femur, as in my case.
No surgery! Just six plus weeks of pain and another two months or so of recovery.
I gained a new appreciation of normal mobility and doing simple things like walking through a shopping mall.

    Best wishes to all.

I look on this link as our maladies page...;)
Unfortunately, I have to join the rest of you--
Last June (2019) I tripped over a low fence rail trying to get the cat in(she was very ill) as a storm was coming- I calculated that I hit the grass at around 15 miles per hour, separating my shoulder from it's socket. The cat ran in , and I struggled to get up (difficult, but feeling embarrassed in case anyone had seen this old codger do a dive)It was 10.30 at night and the misses had already gone to bed. I slept on it (not the bad shoulder0 and went to the hospital in the morning-discovered what I thought the night before
Now, here is the punch line- within a couple of months, I hd suddenly become diabetic..... Over the next few months I had to have the diabetic pills changed three times, because of stomach pain. Then I asked to have a check on my problem, and had a catscan.
Catscan found I had pancreatic cancer that has spread to the liver
Funny old life, but 40 years ago, my father said to me "Everyone has cancer- something triggers it"!
Now I used to smoke a lot, and had difficulty stopping, but out of all the cancers, I gather Pancreatic cancer is one of the less likely to be caused by smoking - I think my old man was so far in front for his generation, and that that fall, and subsequent dislocation was the trigger.
Sod's luck, Of course, it is possible that my smoking caused it, but suddenly becoming diabetic was after I had my annual blood test, and all kidney, liver etc: came back normal.....
So, I will try to pop in sometimes, if I am well enough, as I enjoy seeing the experts on here, and like to think I have made a few friends .Otherwise, I hope my input over the years has been useful, because I learnt a hell of a lot from you all, as I just enjoyed the challenge.
I m on the short list (six months maybe....) but I will not look at that- I have a herbal specialist in the family, and will see if it can help, as I decided not to have chemo-
Thanks to you from around the world for being around , and becoming 'distant' friends
    :)

Sorry to hear the news about your shoulder and then pancreatic cancer ......which is not too good and was probably the start of your diabetes. It amazes me how sometimes little mishaps seem to compound and you end up having big problems.
Pop in and visit MGs when you can and hopefully there will be a few of us old timers still hanging about. I must add that I haven't been sitting at my computer very much lately so although I do my habitual birthday check at midnight every day, I don't sit and read many threads and I don't post quite so much but I will keep an eye out if you are around.:)
Look after yourself and try to stay safe in these difficult CoVid times. My state Victoria, in Australia is currently winning the race for the most active cases of CoVid-19 in Australia and this is not a great achievement :(.........all the best.....cheers joffa

    baklogic - keep the faith!
I've lost a few co-workers and a neighbor to that disease.
This was to be the year of our high school 55th Class Reunion. We've been meeting by Zoom and of course have cancelled any plans for this year. I discovered at the first committee meeting that one of my classmates on the committee is also battling pancreatic cancer.

Laura R, plodr, and Joffa- Thanks for your kind thoughts.
I ain't giving in, though- like with computer problems, I am a stubborn old git. I will beat the 6 month deadline, and without chemo- So I will come on-line whenever I feel good enough (like today) and take each day/week, and month as it comes.
I could not have my ankles pinned around 10 years ago,(caused by damage -running and football as a teenager, becoming arthritic) because of my heart condition (ischemic ) as I have been living on a vein around the back of my heart , being so lucky that my body created its own bypass ( right ventricle coronary artery completely blocked) for over 19 years.
Who knows ? I am a believer , and I have seen others who have had far worse than I have ever had, and some who have had far less wrong pop off far too young. Some on majorgeeks have been through hell.
I have no complaints -I offered Him up there myself, 12 years ago, in place of my son, and again 11 years ago when I lost my other son. I must be a wicked old codger- He would not take me instead.
I am very lucky, and am at peace with myself, and accept my ail's considering myself , otherwise, very fortunate to be here and into my 79th year.
I find the difficulty in my family and friends when they show how upset they are -In that way, I feel so lucky.

Sometimes we have to think for ourselves- Indoors , wearing a mask seems pointless- in UK, if you have breathing problems you can be exempt from wearing a mask. I would think wireless would be worse for you- but look it up.

Very good advice. I look at the headlines but don't read the stories in most cases because it just makes me feel worse. I do watch 1/2 hour of local news nightly and that's it. The rest of the time I listen to soothing music, read, watch Acorntv (murder mysteries mainly) or old movies we have on tape, DVDs or on cards I can pop into a computer or tablet.

You can probably find a site to reinforce or dispell any notion depending on how easy you are to persuade.

I like to get a variety. Google news aggregate seems to offer a good variety. The Guardian seems to cover a wide range of real topics even though they're proud of their slant on items that have opposing viewpoints.

    Fact check
