Don't want to disable Restore Points. I want to create my own but not have Windows creating any at all.

One way to do this is create a system backup. Search from start for "backup", click enter. Click on "go to backup system and restore (windows 7)" then click setup backup, and follow the directions. It will save an image of your whole system to a separate drive. Maybe use a usb HD, or install a second HD to keep it on. Then you can safely turn off system restore, and still have a way to repair your PC. Make a new backup when you want. IMO this is better, because if your main HD fails, just install a new one, and restore from your backup. There are 3rd party software than can do the same thing also. Many are free and available here on MG. https://www.majorgeeks.com/mg/sortdate/drive_cloning_imaging.html

Thanks for the suggestion. I use AOMEI backup but I still wish to leave the Windows option on but want the same Windows from creating up to 5 Restore Points in one day. I fully realize I can turn that thing off but I really don't wish to. Plus, if there is a way to create them in Task Scheduler as shown in the Link, there has to be a way in the same Task Scheduler to stop Windows from creating them. This is what I'm after! ;-)

I rather doubt there is any way to keep system protection on and usable by the user but to stop all system initiated restore points, as there are a number of different conditions that can trigger a restore point. Some years ago I used to use a third party software called Rollback RX and there is a free version for home users. It's pretty impressive but there are some operating conditions that I wasn't totally comfortable with so ceased using it. Definitely worth a look though.

I have never done what your wanting. So if it is possible maybe someone smarter than me will chime in. I do know you can limit the amount of space used for restore points, that would hold back the number it can save/keep. Sorry I could not be more help.

If you haven't done it, where does that leave me? :) The problem with these automatic restore points is, they quickly remove one that is manually created. Consequently, if there's an exciting problem that pops up just prior to their earliest restore point, then there's going to be grief.
There's a way to do this and I've followed instructions but just that one particular instruction one needs, isn't mentioned!

Just skimmed through the link you posted. It seems to do what you want does it not? Use the reg. "hacks" to Set System Restore Point Frequency to Zero. If that does what I think, it will leave the restore service running but not create any restore points except for the ones you make, or on whatever schedule you set in task manager.

Thank you for this. It is possible then I've misread something somewhere about this. If you say there is no way to do what I'm asking, I guess that pretty well settles that. I will take a gander at the Link you gave.

I should add this though. There is a way to have the Restore Points do once a day / week or month or at so many months. But as to making this work, is still up in the air for me. If anyone else happens to roar in on this thread & has the answer as to making it work, please do advise. Thanks!

I believe you already found it, and just don't realize it. The link you provided looks like it does the very thing you want.

I actually had tried what the Link states but can only get so far. I want to set it to once per month but if you go down through that page (setting it up in the Taskmanager) and in the Action part, the instruction says to put the following in the argument box -
/Namespace:\\root\default Path SystemRestore Call CreateRestorePoint "Startup Restore Point", 100, 7

But I'm not sure if that only applies to creating a Restore Point at Startup or if it applies to the once a month thing. But whatever, I've tried it following the directions there and it simply does not work, for after setting it up as that page says, at the end of the day, I've got 6 restore points created which is bizarre!

If you or someone else has ever done this before and happens to see if I'm doing something in error, please advise. Thanks.

It certainly is! What are the types?

I haven't used the Reg Hacks because I went into the Registry myself and found the System Restore Point already set to zero. As I was initially doing that, I thought I had it licked but of course that went nowhere fast.

They are called Windows Modular Installers.

I googled 'windows modular installer creating restore points' and got loads of hits. Seems it is, or was at least, a fairly common problem, first appearing two years ago. I didn't find an answer to it anywhere except to turn off SR or turn off Windows Defender Verification Task in Task Scheduler. You might want to read some of the threads yourself - I may have missed something. Example HERE.

Interesting this whole thing! Thank you so much for at least responding to my cries of despair and offering your expertise! This is much appreciated!

Even though you cannot use SR you probably haven't tried Rollback RX Home I linked you to in #6 but perhaps you should. However if you do you do need to follow some simple rules to ensure you system remains safe -

    - Use your Aomei Backupper to image your system before installing it
    - Once Rollback is installed don't do anything at all outside of your booted Windows system, e.g. don't boot from a USB or CD/DVD
    - Don't create any more Aomei system images while Rollback is installed
    - Uninstall Rollback before restoring your Aomei image. You can uninstall to any restore point you want.

Providing you stick to these rules Rollback Rx is a pretty amazing app, creating whole system backups by schedule or on demand virtually instantaneously and restoring any of the backups in the time it takes to reboot. It's System Restore ^10.

My 'tinkering' days are mostly behind me, but at their height Rollback RX was an amazing tool to have at hand but be warned, if misused it can destroy your system.

You're correct in that I haven't used the Rollbackx program but with these instructions you've given, this will make me a little more at ease if I do gallop over & install it. I did download it but what you had said previously about it being a little 'iffy' I held off.
If do happen to install it, I'll let you know how it goes. Right now, Windows Restore Point is creating 3 restore points per day. Most exciting! Anyway, thank you so much for your expertise in informing me how to use this Rollbackx.

Tried to edit but cannot. I was going to correct from Rollbackx to ROLLBACKRX.

Wonderful Offendee! Wonderful! After doing an In-Place Restore, this amongst other problems has ceased. No more multiple Restore Points created throughout the day! Just wonderful!
