    I seem to have to run a repair on a Windows 10 Home ver. 20H2 (OS Build 19042.630) computer. In trying to follow the instructions in this link, https://www.yourwindowsguide.com/2020/10/cannot-initiate-repair-install-windows-10-20h2.html , but there doesn’t seem to be a Registry key named - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\EditionVersion key. The “Edition Version Key isn’t there.

    The repair I need to run is where I can keep all my files and apps and apparently without that key to edit, I’m not sure how to do that.

    Can anyone tell me if there is registry hack or registry file that can fix that key for me so I can run that repair?

    Thanks

    If you are still able I suggest you roll back to 2004. I always image my system before installing the latest version - this enables you to roll back when it suits and not be limited to doing so in the first ten days. It is not a good idea to upgrade to a new version for a few months until you are satisfied any residual issues have been resolved.

    I all ways refuse to update to the latest version.This current one has had more junk added and some stuff taken away that is needed.Rolling back to 2004 is the best idea.This new 20h2 will cause problems for some.

    I wish I could. The Microsoft support who was supposed to call me back to take care of this deleted files from the prior Windows installations. I do still have a version 2004 media creation tool. If I ran that would it install version 2004 over the 20H2 version? Even then not sure I would be able to do a repair.

    If you definitely don't have the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\EditionVersion then you should be able to enter the reg values without changing any permissions. To do that, right click on the start button and select Windows Powershell (Admin) then copy/paste the following 2 commands one at a time and press Enter after each. If you get success for both commands you should be right to proceed with a repair installation.
    Code:
    REG ADD "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\EditionVersion" /v EditionBuildNumber /t REG_DWORD /d 0x4a61 /f
    REG ADD "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\EditionVersion" /v EditionBuildQfe /t REG_DWORD /d 0x1fc /f

    Rolling back or refusing to update will see you open!

    I'm sorry but I am not sure what was done here. Please look at what one of the links I posted says, "
    • In the search, type Regedit and press Enter. Press yes if prompted.
    • Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\EditionVersion key.
    • Take ownership of the Editionversion Registry key. This is a slightly complicated process – entering the username in the Object types should replace the owner.
    • On the right side, you need to change a couple of values, given below. Right-click the value and choose change.
      • “EditionBuildNumber”=dword:00004a62 ==> Change this key to the 4a61 instead of 4a62.
      • “EditionBuildQfe”=dword:0000023c ==> Change the value of 23c to 1fc
    The final values should look like the following. 19041.508 is the Build number.

    Restart your PC and run the Media Creation tool again."

    Is this what will be happening after I run the 2 reg files you posted? Thanks so much and sorry I don't understand more about this.

    I do have a Windows 10 version 2004 Media Creation Tool. Could I use it to install version 2004 over the current version of 20H2?

    Just so everyone knows, I do not rush to install the most current version of Windows. As a matter of fact, just 2 weeks ago I finally installed version 2004. I was getting help from Microsoft's support and they forced me to install version 20H2 or they wouldn't continue helping me. They said it would correct my problem and it did not. I have been trying to get a resolution from them for over 2 weeks now. I have 14 different case numbers and was working with level 2 support. They get so far and them promise to call me back. 9 times now they have broken their promise to call back. So I am trying to do what I can and the last support person said he would figure out how to do a repair and call me back. Again, no call. So if I can reinstall version I may be able to run a repair keeping my files and apps. That's why I am asking if that is possible. Thanks.

    They should not be forcing people to upgrade.Bad practice be cause as of late a lot of the upgrades that microsoft is handing out are buggy.

    Edit: sadly i did not even update to the 2004 version my system is running perfectly fine with out it.

    I agree but it is too late for me now.

    This is the simplest way to add the revised registry values. It avoids having to change any permissions by using a program called ExecTI. Download ExecTI from https://www.majorgeeks.com/mg/getmirror/execti,1.html

    You'll also need a batch file that I've attached to this post reg_fix.bat or you can make it yourself. The content is in the following code box.
    Code:
    REG ADD "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\EditionVersion" /v EditionBuildNumber /t REG_DWORD /d 0x4a61 /f
    REG ADD "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\EditionVersion" /v EditionBuildQfe /t REG_DWORD /d 0x1fc /f
    pause

    Once you have both ExecTI and the batch file ready, hold down the shift key and right click on the reg_fix.bat file and select from the menu (about half way) Copy as path

    Now launch ExecTI and paste the path into the Open: window, then press OK.

    The batch file will be launched as Trusted Installer and the registry values should indicate that they have successfully been written.

    If everything has gone to plan, restart the computer and run the repair installation.
