I've read it too - but generally, we are talking years (like 8 - 10 years) before degradation occurs - "IF" the drive is properly stored, undisturbed in a cool, dry place.

However, it should be pointed out that flash drives were never meant for long term storage of data. They were never meant to be backup storage devices. Their primary purpose is for very temporary storage. For example, to take a file from home to work.

Thumb drives are just too fragile to be used as backup devices. They can easily be lost, stepped on, or even zapped by static when putting in and pulling out of your pocket. And then there's the fact they are very cheap - and I am referring to cheap as in poor quality and reliability, not cost.
Never! Why? Because I never use flash drives to store important files, or for any type of long term storage. NEVER! And neither should you!

I have about 50 USB sticks, all different brands and all different sizes.

My "workhorse" stick is plugged in then removed several times a week. I just refreshed the backup of this stick. In case it dies, I want the files. Most of the others aren't used too often. I never keep a stick in all the time. I've never used a stick to increase the RAM in a computer. I do store photos and music on sticks but I also have copies either written on a CD or stored on sd/micro sd cards. I like to have at minimum two copies of anything I don't want to lose.

I've only ever had a problem with one USB stick and that was user error. I used the HP format tool and continue to use that stick to try linux live distros from time to time.

user error = I wasn't watching what I put on it and I tried to put more on than it was capable of holding. Then I was not able to move, erase, remove or delete anything.
