    Howdy,

    Happy Thanksgiving!

For some reason I don't have this: AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates. I can't find AppData\Roaming\ files period, to move onto Microsoft\Templates.
In many readings I have seen Cannot Locate Normal.dotm Template. I can't even figure out if the applies to the problem I have had for a long time.

    Thanks in advance...

    Ken

    It is probably hidden.
    Go here https://thegeekpage.com/appdata-folder-is-missing/
and scroll down to Fix 3.

I don't have a MS\Templates folder but this is because no version of Office is installed.
What version of Office are you having a problem with?

Open Control Panel > Folder Options and unhide all files & folders.
Then search for Normal.dot which is where Normal.dotm will be.

Just install Everything search engine and type normal.dot. Once you have Everything you will wonder how you ever managed without it.

Sorry I didn't think of The Office version being needed it is 2016.

I did try your suggested link but it was no help. I noticed it is for Win 10 would that make a difference in things?

I tried this to no avail. if I did it correctly.

Wow, I downloaded this nice search engine and ran it but it did not the normal.dot file either. I must admit it one heck of a lot of files...

Find your Office program in Control Panel > Programs and Features, right click and select Repair. It may ask for your Office installation disk.

Mr.Maggo, if you don't run Windows 10, it would help when you ask for assistance, you mention what version of Windows you are running.
Most solutions found online now are for Windows 10 so I don't spend time looking for an earlier OS unless the poster mentions the version of Windows.

Very sorry as you are correct. I normally do but by the time I begged for help I was so fluster and confused I jumped right in with the question.

Since doing the repair have you tried again to find normal.dot using Everything?

I got to the appdata and roaming via the instructions given with out a problem. I still have two problems I really don't want to leave ALL of the hidden folders showing. Just a choice I have to make later but the big problem is now that I can see the folders there is still no normal.dot...

    What???
    It's all or nothing...

Yes, sadly I understand that and can deal with it. The real issue now is no normal.dot yet so I can get to Window's Templates.

Sweet links. If you take a look at my Word Home page it tells me right on it that it can't get templates even on the first page of Word?

Thanks again for not giving up on me, I have just gotten tired of dealing with the problem for years

Hi plodr, as normal you always come to my rescue, thank you so much.

I'm sorry but I spent more than a hour trying both ways to no avail. I really don't know if I have really lost it or it is this machine that lost it but one or both of us has. I really don't know what to do, I'm not a quitter but this one has me stumped.

OP has already done so - by using Everything a search for normal.dot also finds normal.dotm, so it isn't there.

  24. Eldon

    Eldon Major Geek Extraordinaire

    Search for Normal.dotx.
And then tell us what you want to do with this file.

  25. Earthling

    Earthling Interplanetary Geek

If that exists Everything would have found it, and any other variation of normal.dot. It doesn't exist.

Neither can I! What exactly is this problem you have had for so long?

As these screen shots show the double trouble I am dealing with.

Thanks everyone I guess this is a lost battle...

I just went in and changed it to show all files so that means my App/Data problem is all set. I still have the Templates issue we just can't seem to nail down.

What do you want to do with that file?

  30. Mr.Magoo

    Mr.Magoo Private First Class

Sorry Eldon, I'm not sure which file you mean. If you mean the App/Data file I guess it is because I have always used it and wanted to be able to again. If you mean the Templates I would like to have access to them when I open Word like I should and save others to from the template link that you hooked me up with.

Search for and download free templates, and save them in Documents.

Mr. Magoo those screenshots are too small for me to see.

Also if normal.dot/dotm/dotx is missing, the system is supposed to re-create it. I'm not sure why yours doesn't. I don't have Office installed on my computers so I can't experiment.

  35. Eldon

    Eldon Major Geek Extraordinaire

Yes. As soon as you open Word.
The normal file is what you see when you open Word.

BTW The AppData file is used by programs and Windows.
    That's why it's hidden.

You don't go there to open templates.
