My screen occasionally has some very odd modifications to the desktop icons. They never last and don't really bother me, I took a screenshot of the latest, any idea what is going on? Just curious.

Do you have any tweaking program installed that would modify the shell icon overlay?
To fix the overlay, right click the start button and select Windows Powershell (Admin)
Copy/paste the following command and press Enter:

    REG DELETE "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Icons" /f /v 29

Restart the computer for the change to take effect.

Like I said, not aggravating just puzzling. When I copied the folder in preparatio for my weekly backups I got this. As far as I know stock Win10. though I do have a search program called Agent Rensack installed.

Screenshots were too small for me to see so I had to open a separate tab and keep pressing ctrl + until I got the size up to 200%.
To help anyone else who is unable to see what Wendy is noting:
The first image shows a speaker on most of the images at the lower left. The second image shows a minus sign inside a red circle (similar to a do not enter traffic sign), again at the lower left.

Wendy, ordinarily would there be the arrow indicating that the icon is a shortcut?

If you right click a blank space on the desktop and select Refresh, does the shortcut arrow re-appear?

I have a similar issue on a WinXP laptop at my mother's house. Two icons on its desktop point to two drives that are sometimes connected via a USB port. When not connected, the icon indicates with a question-mark that it doesn't know what drive it is. It has only one working USB port, so I can only connect one drive at a time. It's okay, because it honestly doesn't know what type of drive it is until I connect it. Just commenting....

Ever thought of a powered USB Hub? It both protects the computer (I have zapped my motherboard USB overloading it with a apple device) and allows several more USB devices to be connected to her computer. It shows up when I am doing something with the folder such as copying it to a backup drive, something I do weekly.

    That did work, thanks.

Still wondering why Win 10 did it.
