I Need A Sas Expander Card But What About The Specs? X16 Versus X8 And 12gb/s Versus 6gb/s...

    Hi,

I found myself in need of a SAS expander card to accommodate my Z590 series motherboard that I am running an audio workstation with. Which only comes with 6 HDD Bays.

I am not going to RAID. I need 6 (more) ports. They should support at least 8 TB drives.
But most of the cards I found Googling are either: x1, x2, x4, or Lanes are not mentioned at all.

And then there is 12Gb/s versus 6Gb/s cards...

I am perplexed about which specs I should chase. Which would be good enough? Obviously, I'd like a fast and reliable card.

So help on the subject and also maybe some specific card suggestions would be appreciated.

I wish I could edit my own post like a normal person but I can't! So I update it by posting a better version...

And then there is 6Gb/s versus 12Gb/s cards... I've heard that the performance is %30 better with the latter.

Editing your post has the same time limit for normal and abnormal people here. It is somewhere between 5 and 10 minutes after you post.

And that's normal? What's the deranged idea behind it? What happens after "5" minutes? What is the concern exactly? People would go crazy and offensive after 5 minutes? Or is it a teaching about; if you made a mistake you need to learn to live with it? What is this "5" minutes controversy about?

Also, there is always a clever answer about this trivia stuff, but never an actual answer towards solving the actual problems... Not even a minor geeking. I can't remember getting an answer from the forum ever. Getting a response from the community here is a miracle by itself, in that matter...

I hate bitching! Recently, I got some serious hardware problems and when that happens I post a question in several forums. This place is one of those forums. But these last few times, I got nothing! No comment, not a beep! That was surprisingly frustrating... I didn't bitch then... Well, that's not exactly true. There was the same notorious "5" minutes dilemma and on that occasion as well, strangely enough, the only response I got was about the bloody "5" minutes! At that time the Major Geek Extraordinaire, Eldon was gracious enough to get into a silly argument about 'if the time limit was not 5 but 10 minutes' argument. And then three are full of posts... Al from me... I had a very elaborated a huge backbone story at my original post yet all I got was: "You have 10 minutes to edit a post."

Some major geeking right there... And he was wrong on top of it!

So this is what am I expected to indulge here? Is this my faith here? To discuss if should there be editing the original post? Or is it an abomination to edit one's post after "5" minutes?

Except for the forum, I have benefited from MajorGeeks immensely... Not to mention the all t he gizmos I got from here. They are great. That's why I can't make any sense why this forum is so ineffective and abandoned by the real Geeks...

Also, I beg the differ... I am concerned about the community which I believe you represent.
I am only pointing out the obvious and which can be summed up to one short question:

    Where is the help?

I proposed my problem to other communities too. I would have really liked to experience somewhat similar care and support here as well...
Obviously, you don't have to help me. They didn't have to either...

    They just did...
You chose to spank me for making noise! You guys like it very quiet here... Instead of helping me, which I am here for; your help..
And I presume you are here, well, because you wanna share what you know... But instead, you put your energy and time
(and, therefore mine too... although I am happy trying to explain)
into correcting me like some sort of a correction officer...

I already got help elsewhere... And what you see here is a pile of your offerings...

    Thank you, much obliged...

I'm not going to go full "Major Attitude" here, but what social platforms give you more than 10 minutes to edit your post? Most don't even let you edit. At all.

So listen, I've been coming here over a decade and will tell you right now that exploding and making a stink about editing in the first place ON YOUR SECOND POST was your choice to initiate any level of hostility. There are people who come here to help that still know what SCSI is. And yes, your second post was hostile. This site has probably helped more people than some joints have sold burgers in thirty years.

    Here's your help.

The PCI bus has generations up to 4.0 these days. And that can affect speed depending on the lanes used: https://naplestech.com/bus-speeds/

SO, if you know what your system board PCIe bus slot clocks at, you won't overspend on a card that belongs in a server.

    Have a nice day.

Thank you for your attentiveness, and actually trying to help along with the spanking... But I can give you examples of many respectable forums that do allow editing anytime you wish...

And, I need editing. Because I make mistakes or need to make updates... Why is that a problem? I am asking that all along... But I get no real answer instead, just people correcting me about the time limit, and wrongfully so too, and then on top of it, I get this bashing. And not a beep about the problem... This time was at least there was a link that was useful. Thank you. But then I get the trophy for the muck of the year... Because I complain...

"exploding and making a stink about editing in the first place ON YOUR SECOND POST was your choice to initiate any level of hostility"

First of all my dear friend, that was not my first experience with this specific issue here. I mentioned it previously so I won't do it again, but you have your experience and I have mine.
You are entitled to your opinion but that's what it is, an opinion. You have yours I have mine. I make a stink because, for me, it stank! And obviously, you want your opinion to be louder than mine because it's the better one, right! You can portrait me as it fits in your narrative... But I can tell you with confidence that it lacks a wider spectrum.

    Have a nice day yourself...
