How Do I Get Windows 10 To Access A Usb3 Hard Drive

So on a previous hard drive I had no trouble getting this to work first time wit hout any effort. Of course that hard drive had been pulled from an older computer. So I just got this hard drive in that I plan to use for backups. Looking at devices the computer sees this hard drive I am unable to bring it up the hard drive on my PC list.
so how do I get the computer to show this drive as a hard drive?

Sometimes the 10 minute limit for editing posts is a real PITA. Generally I like my post look prettier than the one above.

Does the drive show under device manager?
Does it have a drive letter assigned?

Yes and yes. I will double check to make sure it is seated correctly.

 

yes see the attached image of the device manager page. I currently have a one terabyte USB 3.0 hard drive also attached this computer that works just fine.

While I can see it in device manager I cannot give it a drive letter, which is the heart of my question. I can return this hard drive if I have to, it is definitely getting power and is warming up. I expected it to show up on my computer when I connected it to the USB 3 port.

 

How are you trying to give it a drive letter are you going through the Computer Management part and reformatting it and then give it a drive letter.

This is the first time I've ever heard of computer manager.

So when I right click this drive none of the options include initializing or formatting. Where do I go from here?

 

You would right click on the unallocated partition & choose format unless there are already files on the disc. Are there any files on the drive?

For me this has been a very productive thread, I am learning a lot of new things. Thanks to everybody who has helped me on this one. Funny thing is I will be teaching this to other people. I consider myself computer literate. Iwould have a long way to learn everything (if indeed that is possible).
