Should I purchase a DVD cleaner kit, the kind that contains a DVD that when run 'cleans' the DVD read mechanism?
    OR
Should I take the DIY approach and use a lint free cloth with a dab of 70% alcohol?

    Thank you.

Ummm, I say none of the above.

For cleaning the drives, I simply use a blast of compressed air from my air compressor. If not near my air compressor, I use a blast from a can of compressed dusting gas.

For cleaning the DVD and Blue-ray disks, I wash them under lukewarm water with a dab of dish soap, then pat them dry with a clean, 100% cotton microfiber cloth made for eyeglasses.

FYI, for minor scratches on the disks (and for watch crystals too!) I put a dab of plain white toothpaste (not gel) on my thumb and gently rub and polish out the scratch. This works remarkable well to fix read and write errors as long as the scratch is not too deep.

If, somehow, the drive's R/W head got gummed up, I would use eyeglass cleaner (not alcohol) and a clean, 100% cotton microfiber cloth made for eyeglasses.

I seem to recall people saying ( back during the CD era ) the best cleaning method was to throw them in a toilet and flush.

    LOL

Did you hear her say around 1:13, "I can't believe I just stuck my hand in there!"?

I think I will stick to holding it under the faucet and not worry about sticking my hand anywhere (assuming I can trust the city water out of the tap to be clean).

And how did he capture it in a bottle?

Never mind I don't want to know - and now I need to start early on my Superbowl drinking to get that image out of my head!
