I had a computer with rich text document that I was able to use.
I now have a different refurbished computer and rich text document will not work the same, and I do not have the license product key to make it work.
is there something I can download that will work the same offline, with different font size and colors?

Windows includes Wordpad.exe. Can deal with various formats including .rtf.

when I open wordpad I can do what I want to do. but after saving that and then opening it again, it says I can not use it that way without the product key.
I can though open wordpad again and just open the file I have saved if I want to make changes.

I'd also recommend Ableword - esp. if you prefer simplicity and good old fashioned toolbar.

    Wordpad is part of Windows.
You don't need a product key.

maybe I wasn't trying the right program. when I tried to open Microsoft Word Document it said I have to sign in to Microsoft Office, and at the bottom it had an option, I have a product key.
Rich Text Document is different and works better.

You can also try LibreOffice. It's like MS Office, but it's free. But for casual home use, Wordpad works well and it's light on resources.

If the "document" ended with doc or docx then Office, either the paid Microsoft or a free replacement would open it.

If the "document ends in rtf, then right click it and you have a choice of programs to open it with.
