    Hi,
win7 64bit pro I always get to decide where any file type is saved., also downloads, I am in control always and have full choice always.
I am about to make it into win10 pro.
On win 10 I see an article saying how to tell it which drive to save music video to, or sound, or photo, or document., as it will save these to C drive by default. One selects a drive from a drop down list for each file type.
hells Bells I want to save a document to any drive, or a usb HDD, not have to say which drive in settings to use for all of that certain file type ! I am not a simpleton, I have been with PCs since win 3.1 and never heard of such dribble.

    I can save a CAD file in Rhino3D to D E F G H I J K L or usb_HDD_012 and so on.

is a CAD file a document, is a Photoshop file a document ?

Please tell me what was possible in win7 and earlier OS's is still possible, and how to set the darn OS to allow that.

I am just starting out on the win10 path and already see such horrors presented me.

I use Win 10. Once you've created your user account, Windows will create your user folder (C:\Users\YourUserName) and then various data file sub folders under that: Download, Documents, Music, Pictures, Video... But you can create data folders wherever you like and redirect Windows there instead. Good write up here.

Documents, Music, Pictures (e.g. Photoshop), CAD data files, etc. are all data files! While Windows created about six or so different folders, nothing stops you from creating more folders -- or dumping every darn data file into "Documents" regardless. All up to you.

Now, most all data files are either downloaded or created by various apps. For example, all browsers will default to Windows "Download" folder - normally under your username folder or whichever new one you created and specified location per above. Pretty much ditto for other apps. Office creates and saves new data files in "Documents" folder. And in both cases, you can override within each app and specify differently.

    Your doing something wrong.
Everything that was in 7 is 10.

    Hi Zebra Last,
I have win 7 to boot straight to screen , I have Admin permission running always, no user name no password etc, I hope to do so in win 10.
The link is about moving files from where windows saved them.
I dont ever let my pc even save to such locations, the first save is me telling windows the directory I want to save to on a drive other than C drive.
I dont want to be having to tell windows to save all music files to a certain location, I would go File save as and browse to anywhere I wish and save it. Then if I alter it and cick save it overwrites that file, not sends it to C somewhere.
Again I have any download ask me where to save it to, I think one sets this up in the browser, or is such needing to be set up in windows OS ?
If I save a dile from Office wor again I get asked where to save it, if I create an Msoft Access database, I tell Office Access where that will be saved to and from then on as I add records it saves to that location.

I want windows to completely forget any ideas it has on saving anything to all these predetermines folders Music, Pictures, Docs etc.
I dont want to have to tell it to save all music to a set location, each save I want to be my choice each time, so first save D drive folder, next save F drive folder, and so on.
Thats how it is in win7 as I have set it up.

Replicator, if win 7 is also win 10 (thats comforting, I truly hope its same and not dictatorial), then I just need to know how to tell it I have total say in all this, and what I say above is do-able, from the first moment win 10 is working.

Where do I make these rules and stop win10 from doing its own thing ? During install or after and where do I go ?

    Cheers

In explaining how to change defaults, etc. up above, I may have made things appear complicated. They are not.

Suffice to say, in terms of saving files, Win 10 won't stop you from saving files the way you have been doing under Win 7.

Yes, some of the 'pathways' to your end point may differ, but the song remains the same.
Your not used to 10 ways yet so its frustrating......thats understandable.
Stick with it and the light will shine :)
