Random Crash / Random Reboot

I have had a problem that's been plaguing me for some time now. Very often (most often) my computer crashes without any visible reason not long after start up (within 15 minutes usually). Sometimes it'd keep doing this after a restart then eventually it will settle down and keep working quite happily.

I have a Macrium Reflect backup of the entire c:\ drive and if I use this to restore a working version, all is well again UNTIL I receive a Windows Update (I wish I knew how to prevent those!!). My computer works perfectly until a Windows Update is downloaded and installed - then it goes back to playing silly buggers again.

Not sure how to proceed but as you can imagine it's a bit irritating. I have downloaded TWEAKING.COM_WINDOWS_REPAIR_AIO_SETUP.EXE
    Should I try this?

Thank you very much in anticipation! :)

Tweaking.com is safe to run and won't cause any new issues and may help with your current one. You haven't told us what your OS is, 7, 8, 10 or 11?

Crashes? Blue Screens? Locks up / stops responding? Reboots? The devil is in the details.
Depending on the issue / OS you can start with sfc /scannow and on new Win OSes DISM. (LINK)

Sorry, yes that was a silly omission - my bad! It's Windows 10 home edition. I set Tweaking.com running just before I went to bed last night because I knew it'd take a long time. I set it to turn off PC after completion. I was full of eager anticipation this evening when I switched it back on but my PC ran for approximately 5 minutes then the mouse pointer froze and I had to restart using the power button. Huge disappointment. I restarted and I'm now a good 15 minutes in and we're still up and running. Fingers crossed!

    Thanks for your reply! :)

Thank you for your reply! I had already tried both the sfc /scannow AND DISM inside of PowerShell to no avail. The exact symptoms are that the mouse pointer freezes and CAPS and NUM lock will not change on depression of the associated keys. However it also sometimes just decides to randomly reboot - right in the middle of doing something! I have not had a BSOD yet. Another symptom (that's probably irrelevant) is a buzzing sound through the speakers at the same time as the freeze-up.

I have had a good look at disabling a Windows Update but it looks as if Microsoft do not want users to do this. Does anyone know how to force windows 10 not to update? Is there perhaps a Registry tweak? It's invariably just after a Windows Update that this problem arises.

Sounds like hardware... I've seen power supplies cause this, RAM, a radiator pump (water cooler)...

I did wonder about it being a hardware issue but this only seems to happen AFTER a Windows update. That kind of excludes hardware as a possible cause.

Apparently "You must be using Windows 10 Pro or Windows 10 Enterprise Edition to use the Group Policy Editor" - too bad. :-(

I followed the instructions on how to add gpedit.msc as a snap-in and got so far. I added the snap-in but then when I went to edit the registry as per the instructions, the location of gpedit.msc was not the same as what was on the instructions (When I searched for the string the registry came back with 'not found' however I asked it to search for gpedit.msc it did find it but in a different location. I was wary about carrying out the edit.)

Ignore the above. I have now successfully installed (and now used) gpedit.msc. Thank you again for your very helpful input. I almost feel like a wizard now. ;-)
