    Hi,
I installed Files2Folders yesterday onto my Windows 10 desktop and all was working well. Today, not so much...
I get an error message which reads...
"This file does not have an app associated with it for performing this action. Please install an app or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Apps Settings page."
I have no idea what's happened. I tried deleting the Files2Folder.exe and the associated files (.ini) and reinstalled as before but nothing has worked.
The option is still there in the context menu though but I just get this same damn error message, again and again...
    Any ideas....?

Most likely, you've broken the file association for the context menu entry, by moving Files2Folder.exe
If Files2Folder.exe is now located where you want to keep it, leave it there, otherwise move it to a permanent location.

Next, create a registry file as follows to remove the previous context menu entry.
Create a new text file and copy/paste the content of the following code box
    Code:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\WOW6432Node\CLSID\{a951a7c0-97b1-11de-b5f4-0002a5d5c51b}]

    [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell\Files 2 Folder]

    [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell\Files 2 Folder]

Then go to File > Save As and Save as type: All Files (*.*) - File name: F2F_remove.reg
Double click on F2F_remove.reg and allow it to merge with the registry

Go back to Files2Folder.exe and right click Run as administrator to register the shell extension
All going well, Files 2 Folder should now work

Hi. I'm heaving the same problem the guy starting this thread had 3yrs ago.
I upgraded an old laptop from Windows 7 to 10 and Files2folder doesn't work anymore.
I get the same error: "This file does not have an app associated with it for performing this action.
Please install an app or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Apps Settings page."
I did what _nullptr suggested I also cleaned the registry but I still get the same error.
I hope someone can help me with this because I can't find an alternative to Files2folder
and I'm used to this bcs I use mostly Mac (where this option is there by default).
    Thanks for your help guys.

If you read this at MajorGeeks' download page

You'll see Windows 10 is not supported.
I also went to the source
    https://www.dcmembers.com/skwire/software/
the program is from 2014 and doesn't support Windows 10.

Thanks for this thread. I have found Files2folder to be a useful little utility that I thought I had lost for awhile, but this thread got it back.
Yes - it is running under Windows 10 22H2

Maybe did not need all of these steps but:
    - logged out of my user account and logged in as admin (just running as admin did not work).
    - ran the .reg file above (this had worked once before but this time had to take a few extra steps).
    - ran regedit and searched files2folder and deleted everything it found.
    - logged out of admin account and then back in (may not have to do this)
    - then while in admin account ran the files2folder.exe; it asked if I wanted to register the shell extension, clicked Y
    - signed out of admin and back in to user account.
    - right clicked on a file, files2folder was there it is working.

I just tried this method & I can confirm it still works. The final 2-3 Files2Folder references in the registry search couldn't be deleted for some reason (located in or near "Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\bam\State\UserSettings\"). I just ignored the last few, right-clicked on "Files2Folder.exe" again, selected "Run as administrator" and everything worked again.
