( didn't know where to put this.....)

When an online site asks for my email address and password, my email address pops up with a password that is incorrect. How do I stop this? I endup having to type in my email addy and then the correct password.Any ideas?(PS LauraR you can move this...lol)

It sounds like your browser, or a password manager is autofilling incorrect information. There are a few ways to fix it, but it would help to know what browser you're using so we don't give you a whole ton of extra information.

Unless you want it for every browser? I'll happily type that out for you.

So, depending on what you want to happen, just FYI the impact on the rest of your saved passwords will be as follows:
    • Editing: Only the specific entry you modify is updated.
    • Deleting Entries: Permanently removes saved passwords for that specific site.
    • Clearing Autofill Data: Deletes all stored form data, including usernames and passwords, unless backed up.
    • Switching to Password Managers: Saves credentials separately, leaving browser-stored passwords untouched unless you choose otherwise.
    Let me know!

I ran my answer through an AI to make sure it was clear and concise. It looks okay to me, but if it worded anything stupid, let me know. These are 5 different troubleshooting techniques. Read the whole thing before picking a method, so you can read what could go wrong.

Step 1: Update Saved Login Information
If Chrome is autofilling the wrong credentials for a specific site, you can locate and update or remove that saved login.
    1. Open Chrome and click the three-dot menu (top-right corner) → Settings.
    2. Under Autofill, select Passwords.
    3. Search for the website in the list or use the search bar at the top.
    4. Click the three dots next to the incorrect entry:
    • Select Edit to update the email address or password.
    • Select Remove to delete the saved credentials entirely.
    Potential Consequences:
    • Editing: The updated email and password will overwrite the old information for this specific site. This does not affect other saved passwords.
    • Removing: The site’s credentials will be permanently deleted from Chrome. You’ll need to re-enter and save them the next time you log in.
    Step 2: Clear Autofill Data
If the incorrect credentials keep reappearing or you want to reset all saved autofill data, clearing autofill data may help.
    1. Go to the three-dot menu → Settings → Privacy and Security.
    2. Select Clear browsing data.
    3. Click on the Advanced tab and check Autofill form data.
    4. Uncheck everything else unless you want to clear additional browsing data.
    5. Click Clear data.
    Potential Consequences:
    • Clearing autofill data will remove all saved form data, including usernames, passwords, and other form entries.
    • Chrome passwords saved in your Google Account will remain unless you specifically delete them from the password manager.
Step 3: Disable and Re-Enable Chrome’s Autofill Feature
    1. Sometimes toggling the autofill feature can resolve persistent issues.
    2. Go to Settings → Autofill.
    3. Disable Passwords, Payment methods, and Addresses and more.
    4. Restart Chrome.
    5. Re-enable the features you need.
    Potential Consequences:
    • Temporarily disabling autofill does not delete saved data. When you re-enable it, Chrome will continue using the saved credentials.

Step 4: Use Chrome’s Password Manager
To check or update all saved passwords:
    1. Go to the three-dot menu → Settings → Passwords.
    2. Here, you can:
    • Review saved credentials by clicking the eye icon (requires system password).
    • Export all saved passwords using the three dots in the top-right corner → Export passwords.
    • Manually add or update credentials for specific sites.
    Potential Consequences:
    • Exported passwords are saved as a plaintext file, which is not secure unless stored properly.
    • Deleting or editing passwords only impacts the specific entries you modify.
    Step 5: Check Browser Extensions
Some extensions can interfere with autofill functionality.
    1. Go to the three-dot menu → Extensions.
    2. Disable any extensions related to passwords or autofill.
    3. Test autofill functionality to identify the problematic extension.
    4. Re-enable extensions one at a time.
    Potential Consequences:
    • Disabling extensions won’t affect saved passwords, but password manager extensions might temporarily stop working until re-enabled.

    Key Takeaways for Chrome:
    • Editing passwords: Updates the specific entry without affecting others.
    • Removing passwords: Deletes them permanently for that site in Chrome.
    • Clearing autofill data: Removes all form data but does not delete passwords saved in your Google Account.
    • Disabling autofill: Temporarily stops autofill without deleting saved data.
    • Using a password manager: Saves credentials in a separate system that can work alongside Chrome.
Let me know if you'd like help navigating these settings!

So does chrome....the problem was/is a wrong password is associated with my email addy, which pops up on some ( if not all). sites asking for both.

I was thinking about your problem, and I think the problem isn't necessarily just your browser. Do you have Google set to sync on all of your devices? I've found that sometimes when sync is on, it will either not save the right password or overwrite the new password with an old one the next time you sync it from a device that still has the old one in there, and it's annoying AF.

You may have also lucked out considering 16 billion passwords were just hacked from Google and Facebook.

Again? I have so many of those data breech notices that I just assume 10 people are using all of my accounts at this point.
