Me again! Finally got Linux installed on my 2nd machine - had a hard time as it would not install from any of the DVD's I had made. Finally loaded the ISO file to a USB jump drive and it installed. Liking it so far - easier to add software and my printer over windows/trying to find my disks or the network printer! Anyway my problem is no sound while watching online videos using firefox. I researched and printed/followed a bunch of things but still no sound? I do have sound for the various things like Linux mint starting etc as well as I just tried a saved youtube video off of a jump drive and I have sound. Any ideas on how to fix this? I haven't looked yet is there a different browser I should be using or am I missed a setting or extension I need?

Update! I installed Chromium and have sound now with videos. Still would like to get firefox working but at least I can use Chromium.

Perhaps the tab is muted? I had that issue before as well. To check, try pressing Ctrl+M or click on the tiny speaker icon in the tab itself to unmute it.

Thanks but tried that as I have muted tabs several times accidentally while selecting a tab!

Try this: Click on the System Settings option, then scroll down to Hardware and select Sound. In the sound menu, you'll find an Application tab where you can adjust the volume for each application. You may need to make adjustments there.

In firefox check the little box in the circle of the pic I posted, and see if sound is blocked there. If so just click it and select unblock. This could be it. Hope it helps.

No sound isn't blocked there. And I noticed the permissions for youtube block audio and video setting in your picture which I have found and made sure it is set to allow audio and video! Thanks anyway! Anything is worth looking at but I can get by now since I downloaded chromium and sound works with it. Still would like to figure it out but can live with it now.

Have you had any luck getting sound on FF? IF not have you tried updating it to latest version (as well as Linux)? After that maybe trying to fully uninstall/remove FF and reinstall a current version of it?

No luck but I haven't been trying anymore. To be honest the machine is an extra and I haven't even turned it on for a long time till just now. It did 92 updates and still no sound on FF. I just use Chromium if I need sound. Thanks though for the advise. I am a computer hoarder and this is just one of many I have and I decided I wanted Linux on one of my machines hence this machine.

IF you want a Firefox based browser that is a little more privacy leaning, check out both Pale Moon and Basilisk.

I hear you. I'm also a vintage tech collector . I've been trying to fix and get some of my older gear going again as I had some crashes. And yes, playing with Linux, mainly Mint LMDE 7.

Thanks I will try those browsers! Good luck fixing your older machines! I had quite a time with mine but think I should have worked harder getting the old systems going rather than reformatting and reinstalling them. Hindsight always better than foresight!

I think I should probably try to fire up two other old machines! Thinking they should be fired up occasionally which might help them keep running!
I have an old IBM that runs off of two 5.25" floppies, no hard drive! Then I have my old Packard Bell, my first computer! It has the old windows 3.1.

No problem, I would say try Pale Moon first. Which ever you choose DON'T install the latest/most recent version, install the version from March 2026. You will need to go directly to their website to get the archived versions. The reason I say this is because I have the latest version from April and now can't login to my Yahoo mail but was able to with the March version. Thought this may not be the cause as Yahoo has been having problems with logging in since at least last year.

Additionally as an FYI there is a fork of Basilisk that will run on XP. It was kept up to date (and think it still is, but not 100% sure because my one old laptop from early 2000's 256MB memory stick died causing it to run dirt slow as it only has 64MB internal memory and I haven't checked for updates for it as the memory died a while ago, maybe 2 ~ 3 or more give or take years ago. Oh, I have it Dual Boot with Win 7 Pro on one partition, with that little memory, it is slower than dirt slow, LOL). And there use to be a Portable version of Pale Moon.

Those were the days, I still have some 5 1/4" and a bunch of 3.5" floppies around, most with data still on them. I still have an old Tandy 4000 with 386, though can't remember IF I upgraded it to 486. Bought it way back when Radio Shack was "retiring" them from the stores POS systems. I then got an AT&T computer that I eventually upgraded with a better MB inside. I do also have a computer I built up that has a dual socket 370 mother board in it I would like to see what it will do with Win 7 Pro on it. Now IIRC it has XP Pro. Maybe after I get the repairs done on my daily drivers laptop(s).

Yes, do what you can to keep your old tech alive!!!

Please keep us posted/updated if you try any other browsers.
