Textpad has been left in the dust, so I want to switch to something that has not been abandoned, and offers the same functionality as textpad (syntax highlighting, compile+run commands for java, etc).

Does anyone have any good ideas? I don't care if it's free or paid.

Dont see why you want to change just because its not under development any more.

It still is brilliant editor and everything works and you know what they say: "dont fix whats not broken"

I hae been a completely satisfied fan of Notetab. The Lite version is free, the standard version is around 10 bucks US and the pro version is 20Bucks. Try the lite first and see what you think.

Confused on what you meant by that, you actually thought I randomly searched for an alternative application? I actually typed "I use" in my posting.
Plus OP asked for a program that is still currently active, and PN still is. The author responds to problems on their own message board.

I use Programmer's Notepad for web editing instead of using notepad because it formats/highlights code very well, and I have used it to edit Yahoo desktop gadget modules (which contains Java applets). BUT I missed out the part where he mentioned about compiling Java which PN, I believe, does not do.

Don't attack me. Maybe you need to re-read. Quote the part that OP states that. OP stated "Does anyone have any good ideas?".

It helps if one does actually use the program in order to make a recommendation. And at times any recommendation is more beneficial than no recommendation as long as one does their research on top of it.

Actually the OP asked the question in 2006 so I suspect he/she has found a replacement in three years.
codecutter99 dredged up the thread to post spam about a paid program. We continued to post alternatives so anyone reading this thread would see that there are many good and free alternatives.

Ahh yes good catch, I was wondering why I paused when I saw the "1" posting from that user.

Wanted to comment on part of the OP's statement. There's things missing from TextPad, I'll agree there. Been using it for 10+ years and it hasn't evolved all that much. However, it is still under active development. Considering the age of this post, likely no one cares.

I ran across this post precisely because I'd like features I've become more accustomed to in VS'05 (C#) and Zend Studio (PHP). It's not like I work for Helios, but it's always been a really great product. As far as free alternatives, though I've not quite made it a habit, the portableapps.com edition of NotePad++ has been nice to tote around if doing on-site work away from my usual rigs.

Took Cutter's suggestion of Zeus as an alternative to T.P. and it worked for me :)

    Thanks Cutter.
