I asked for help about this a few days ago but I don't think I explained the problem properly so here goes. Long story short, a friend of mine bought a wireless router and in order to set it up he needs to access the router configuration page. The problem is that his computer when plugged into the internet won't load web pages. He can sign into MSN messenger fine but when he opens up his IE browser the screen just stays white or it says page cannot be displayed. I figured it might be spyware so I sent him Adaware and Spybot and while those found problems they didn't correct the browser problem. I also thought it might be his browser so I had him install Firefox but it wasn't that either. So until we get the browsers working we can't setup the router. Anybody have an idea on what could be causing this or how to fix it? (Note: We have no problem with the router setup, just simply getting the browsers to work.) Thanks!

Have him go into Control Panel -> Network Connections -> Local Area Connection (Right-click, choose Properties) -> General tab, highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), press Properties button and report back everything on its General tab.

And what IP address is being specified for the router setup?

Had him do that and both the IP address options and DNS options are set to obtain automatically. He has the information from his IP so I had him put that in and it still didn't work.

The router isn't being setup yet. His computer is connected straight to his DSL modem.

IE still came up with the "This page cannot be displayed" line. I find it so weird that his MSN messenger works but his browsers don't.

That's what initially made me think of the LSP thing-- it seemed like the most likely choice.

might also try the winsock reset if xp sp2
start run cmd then hit ok, then in command prompt type
    netsh winsock reset

Then reboot and see if that clears anything up.

He is running service pack 1, could that be the problem? And if so how can he obtain SP2 without browser access? His IE also isn't up to date but the latest Firefox didn't work either so I doubt that's the problem.

Could be part of the problem as microsoft i believe stoped supporting sp1 for security updates. What can do is download this Network Install and burn it to cd to run on his machine.
