So this morning I opened Limewire (I wish I had never installed that :crap on my machine :banghead) and searched for "funny" pics. Dloaded a few but there wasn't anything good, not to mention all the adult material that came in with it :mad . I was deleting the pics and one of them just stayed there. I right clicked and the usual menu (scan with, cut, copy..etc) wasn't there. I can't drag 'n' drop the file anywhere, can't delete it, can't copy it. When I attempt to delete it using FileShredder or File Assassin I get the message "invalid filename". So, any ideas what on earth might be wrong with that file?

:) I had the same problem once, sailor....What I did was put it into a folder by itself and then deleted that folder. It took the file with it...Hope that works for you :) After that I started scanning anything I downloaded (except music) with AVG

If you've got Spybot Search and Destroy, select Advanced Settings, click Secure Shredder, and drag the file or picture into there.

Quidkidinnit, as mentioned I can't even drag n' drop the file, it's really weird.
I already tried musknipe's suggestion and got a more interesting result that I should have mentioned in the first post. I get an error that sshot-1.png
you can't read it but I posted it just to give you an idea of what it looks like. It says
"file could not be deleted: Access was not allowed
Make sure the disk is not full, the file is not write protected and that it is not being used at the moment."
Of course I checked these things and I am not viewing the pic while attempting to delete it. I can't view it at all. Perhaps it's more than a pic....:cry

Have you re-booted since? Sometimes I've deleted a file, and it appears to stay, but gives the errors you mentioned if I try & do anything further to it. Once I reboot, the file goes away. It appears to be some sort of "Windows Limbo" it's in.

I rebooted, tried safe mode, nothing.

Did you run "Check Disk" to make sure the file isn't corrupt in some way? Sometimes desperate times call for desperate measures: Do have System Restore points enabled?... Can you try rolling the O/S back to before you downloaded the file(s)?

Keep in mind that rolling back using System Restore points will typically removed any trace of applications installed since that time. If you've installed stuff since the download you mentioned, you'll probably have to reinstall it.

Check disk didn't show any faults. There should be a message or somethin if it had, right? I also defragmented the hd with Auslogic and one file could not be processed (hmmm). System restore didn't help but I think sys restore is meant to keep pics, documents and such stuf. Any other ideas?

Never could do the bitscan? Or a panda scan? I'd be very suspicious of a warning message in greek ...or whatever.

Go it off limewire ...makes me more certain of virus crap.

I couldn't figure out how to allow ActiveX in IE6 so I couldn't take the Bitscan.
I have the Greek edition, how should the message appear, lol? Do you think it's worth it bothering the malware forums?

Tools / internet options ...security ...lower it or go into custom and check the appropriate boxes for active x.
    Enable active X
Enabling Active X for Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0
Click Tools and select Internet Options on the Internet Explorer menu bar.
Click the Security Tab and select the Internet Zone.
Click Internet to display the settings for the Internet Zone.
Click the radio button to select Custom (for expert users).
Click the Settings button to open the Security Settings window.
Scroll to the Active X controls and plug-ins and verify that the options are set to Enable or Prompt.
Scroll to the Scripting Section and verify that Active Scripting is set to Enable or Prompt.
Note: Clicking a checked box removes the checkmark and disables the feature.
If you see checkmarks in the Enable or Prompt boxes, do not click on the checked boxes.
Click OK to close the Security Settings window.
Click OK to close the Internet Options window.

Alternatively, if the above fails, you can also try and enable movies to be played in your explorer.
In Microsoft's Internet Explorer, this options is available under:
    Tools
    Internet Options
    Advanced
    Multimedia
then place a tick in the "Play movies in Internet Explorer" field.

I've noticed that when there is a process still running from a file and I try to delete it, i get that message (in english);) ....Have you checked your running processes to see if there is something you don't recognize?

musksnipe, there are a few that I've no idea what they are but maybe a program I installed uses it, I can't be sure about that. Ooops there are duplicates of atievxxx.exe and CLI.exe and I got 4 pieces of svchost.exe :eek!!! Something is definitely wrong. Tim, thanks for tellin me how to enable activeX. I'll take the scan (it won't be the lastone :() and report right to the malware forum.

svchost.exe is okay..I have four of them too. They are service processes for windows. The others I don't know about.

I have a total of 29 processes running right now..When I'm doing nothing it is about 24 or 25

I know it's a good process but I used to have only one. Why four?

The other two processes are related to your ati graphics card ...post the bitscan as directed. Or (if it is showing nasties) ..start a thread in malware.:)

There are many processes covered by svchost.exe. They should all be safe. Google it. ;)
Some spyware can disguise itself as svchost.exe compare what you have running with the google results.

Getting back to the original problem. If the file in question is an INCOMPLETE DOWNLOAD it will have a name such as T%86744 or whatever. If your computer is saying the file doesn't exsist that might be the reason.

Get http://www.majorgeeks.com/Pocket_KillBox_d4709.html and copy the name of the file into the window and delete on reboot.

Sorry go to go at work:p
