If you download a program called G-Spot from this site we may be able to help more (you haven't given a great deal of info).

G-Spot looks at video's and tells you what format they are in and if you have the software (codec) needed to play it. Once you have the correct codec you should be able to play it in Windows Media Player.

If you can only play 5 seconds of the file then there are a couple of other possibilities.

    1) You have a trial version of Vodei Media Player and until you buy it you will only be able to play 5 seconds of video,
    2) Your video is corrupt.

Looking at the Vodei website this looks like a Codec for windows so I'm leaning towards you file being corrupt. Can you redownload or recreate the video?

thanks for your help iam going to post something for another source about this software . then you mite understand me better cos iam still a novice . OK: Here's my story. I had Vodei installed for the free trial thing, after which it started giving me the "must purchase etc etc" nonsense. I uninstalled it, deleted all the "vodei" registry nonsense and reinstalled it, still have the same problem, it did not reset the trial.

I got the nobbled .ax file from the vladd44 site. I uninstalled the vodei 2.0 I already had, deleted registry info for it, deleted the folders, restarted, and installed vodei 1.09. Then I switched the nobbled file in, restarted, and I still get the "Must have Vodei 2.0 or higher to View" video clip whenever I try to play any of my movies.

this mite explain it more . thanks for reading it and your help ive tried to get as much info as possible .Vodei is a file format consisting of a short AVI file with an additional encrypted/obfuscated segment appended to the end.

The AVI portion of the file usually contains a short advertisement for vodei.com encoded with Microsoft RLE. Vodei.com sells software which will decode the additional segment. Although advertised as a "free download", this is adware which will persistently nag the user for payment.

Vodei is not a codec, and after extracting the additional data from the end of the AVI file, simply passes it to the standard Video For Windows interface for decoding. (Since the Vodei software contains no codecs, the Vodei web site recommends that the user install ffdshow.)

It is also believed that Vodei itself is encoding movies in vodei format to entice users into buying vodei just for a few movies.

are you simlpy trying to play movies you have saved on your pc? try.. right click on the movie file. highlight ( OPEN WITH ) this will give you the option to play it with WMP on other players you might have installed.

I imagine that the Vodei 'add on' to the media file bars players other than their own from playing the software but it might be worth changing the file extension to .avi and seeing if Windows Media Player can open it if WildWolf220's method doesn't work.

The other option is that there are a couple of media converting programs here on MG, using one of them you may be able to convert the file to DivX (or MPEG2 for 2 common examples) and play that.

I must admit that I haven't had much luck with the ones I've used (I tried using it to convert Nero burns of my DVD's to MPEG2 so my media center extender recognised the format).

Must admit, other than that I think you may have to put this down as a 'learning experience' and just delete everything Vodei related.

Think you've run into one of my pet hates free software that changes it's mind in use.

Yo guys, I gots the same problem - Certain movie files I downloaded (yes, you caught me), only have a picture that tells me to download vodei when I open them.
Obviously, I downloaded vodei posthaste and installed it. ****ing mistake. I only got to play the files for around 15 minutes before it wouldn't let me carry on before purchasing the full version of vodei.
So I've now uninstalled it, and I'm back to square 1; a 'movie' that lasts for 3 seconds; the screen telling me to download vodei. I was going to convert the file type, but quickly discovered it was .avi already.
Any further endeavors to help would be more than appreciated.

Avoid the Vodei media player and anything connected to it. Vodei is more a form of DRM than a real codec. There is no converting it.
