Add it to your signature, if you want.:)

ha/we can't. It has to be up to 2 lines, right?

Maybe that's the rule but I've see specs in sigs that look like shopping lists, even down to fans. A real pain to scroll past all that.

augiedoggie, you're right. Perhaps we should have something like
    "State your:
    Motherboard
    Central Processing Unit
    Video and Graphics Accelerator
    RA Memory
    Hard Disk
    Power Supply Unit
...and that's all, got it?" LOL
Even if we don't put the specs in our profiles, such a form is definately needed in the hardware forum, when creating a thread.

Existing signatures over 2 lines are being 'honored' but once you change your sig, you will go down to 2 lines like the rest of us :)

just thought it would be handy to have in both the software and the hardware forum. as sailor said, an actual list would be helpful to those like me that dont even know what half that stuff is. if it was attatched to our sigs (or similar) than that way those answering questions would only have to click on profile, to get all the info they wanted and it wouldnt matter how long the threads got. aloha n stuff

My advice is to make your list, then throw it on the web with some free web space provider, then give the link in tech threads when you need to give the information out.

I for one, can't stand mile long signatures with system specs.

.... Or place the specs in a .TXT file via Notepad on the desktop or where ever. Call up the file and copy and paste into the thread.

that might work....so according to the list that sailor made it would be :-

    motherboard - ??
CPU - 2800+ AMD athlon XP
video and graphics accelerator - ??
RA memory - 120 GB ultra DMA hard drive
    hard disc - ??
power supply unit - 10/100Mbps ethernet

and there is '512 MB DDR' what ever that is.

as you can see, i have a bit of a problem with this. the thing is that if i dont understand what 'specs' are needed and how to find them, than its fairly safe to assume that there are others like me. i know this may all sound dumb to most of you, but to the techno challenged like me, its just another thing that makes us feel confused. much aloha

confused you got right only the CPU.:(
Video and Graphics Accelerator (VGA) is your graphics card.
The Randomly Accessed Memory (RAM) is the 512 MB DDR you say.
120 GB ultra DMA hard drive. So this should be in the hard disk place.
last but not least Power Supply Unit (PSU) is the device that splits the DC to many cables and does the poewr management in your system.

But why am I saying these things? I thought you knew them.

  12. laurieB

    laurieB MajorGeek

no, i dont know them. when i post 'specs' i just copy everything it says on the front of the puter. so now we have....

    motherboard - ??
CPU - 2800+ AMD athlon xp
video and graphics accelerator - ?? (i dont think i have one of those)
RA memory - 512 MB DDR
hard disc - 120 GB ultra DMA
    power supply - ??

how do i find out what my 'motherboard' is? and the PSU?

lol, this is not what the thread started about but... it's your thread. There are diagnostic utilities which let you tell you the name of every part in your PC. i know a couple but I won't link to them as I haven't used any of them, therefor I can't suggest them.

Everest Free will tell you all you need to know about your PC LaurieB :)

    ok. so now we have
    Motherboard Name - MSI KM3M-V (MS-7061) / KM4M-L (MS-6734 v1) / KM4AM-L (MS-6734 v2) / MS-6786
CPU - 2800+ AMD athlon xp
video and graphics accelerator - ?? (i dont think i have one of those)
RA memory - 512 MB DDR
hard disc - 120 GB ultra DMA
power supply - ?? (under 'power management properties' it just says 'AC line'

so is that everything that needs to be there?

Yup, that's basically it! If anyone needs more, they'll ask you. It will probably be drivers etc.

Belarc Advisor is a nifty, small and free (for non-commercial use) program I use and recommend. It not only gives you a very comprehensive hardware profile, but a software profile, too. It will even find out your software keys you may have misplaced and forgotten. does a complete P.C. audit.

Then just copy and paste what you want to a *.txt file, like Ken3 said. Works for me. ;)

A brief version can be copy/pasted into your Personal Profile (Under 'Interests'), as suggested.

Agree with Halo and Phantom, Everest and Belarc Advisor both do the job.
Belarc is more detailed than Everest.
I use, and recommend, both for any XP PC. Bazza

Is this a lounge or hardware question?

(testing to see how many lines in my sig)

  20. Phantom

    Phantom Brigadier Britches

Well, since it's not related to a hardware problem, just a query about sigs., I'd say The Lounge is the right place for it. Unless a Mod/Admin disagrees, and wants to move it. Whatever.

  21. laurieB

    laurieB MajorGeek

well thats what i thought..lol. maybe there should be another 'sticky' explaining the information required and how to obtain it?

anyway thanks guys. i now have my little list saved so i can paste it on any future posts. i have now deleted the program as i doubt i will have any further use for it. (eg. i dont even know what a 'software key' is!! let alone if its been misplaced.)

Belarc is a pretty small program (if you , indeed decided to use that prog.). Easy to re-install if you need to.

Software Key = Serial No.; Licence Key, etc.:- Required to be known and entered correctly in order to install M.S Windows/Word etc. Ergo:- C.D. is useless without it.

eewww.. lets hope i never crash than. whos bright idea was that i wonder....
"i know, lets put secret codes on everything, to be stored in some far obscure corner of their computers, that will prevent them from reloading prgrammes that they were dumb enough to crash"

Supposedly, an anti-piracy measure. Just deters the casual copier that might not have access to the key-code, and helps identifies the legit user.
