    Hello,
Over the past 3 months I've been experiencing consistant browser hijacks, pop-ups for WinAntivirus20006 (and some others too numerous to recall) along with what seems to be another common issue...unable to open the IE7 or windows explorer (running WinXP, SP2).
If lucky, a few re-boots was able get the OS stable enough to launch IE7 or Windows explorer long enough to browse, but eventually IE would start to get hijacked to AV sites (when using google search) and win explorer (and IE) would open and close quickly.
I've followed ALL the scan procedures posted on your malware forum and to a large extent, the IE and Windows explorer stability has returned (thanks); however I still have the hijack issue on IE. I have also run Hijackthis and captured the logs (posted here and a second post) for a total of 6 logs for the following:
    On this posting:
    -CounterSpy
    -BitDefender
    -PandaActiveScan

On a subsequent posting in this thread:
    -GetRunKey
    -ShowNew
    -HijackThis

Your assistance and recommendations based upon the logs (esp. with the hijack issue) is sincerely appreciated. Thanks.

    Ians

You need to start by uninstalling My Kazaa Gold this is where your problems began with WinAntivirus.

Also uninstall Sunbelt CounterSpy since we are finished with it an also because you have Ad-Aware's Ad-watch running.

Also uninstall the below old version of Sun Java:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10

Make sure you reboot after uninstalling the above!

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Do you know what they are and where the below registry patch files came from
    Code:
    "C:\"
    cc1548~1.reg Jan 6 2007 29548 "cc_20070106_1216.reg"
    cc_200~1.reg Jan 6 2007 86689 "cc_20070106_1126.reg"
    cc_200~2.reg Jan 6 2007 52466 "cc_20070106_1156.reg"
    cc_200~3.reg Jan 6 2007 78366 "cc_20070106_1205.reg"
    cc_200~4.reg Jan 6 2007 1921 "cc_20070106_1212.reg"
They are all pretty new (from Jan 6 th).

Now run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Window Messenger.

Continue by downloading two tools we will need

    - Process Explorer

    - Pocket KillBox

Extract them to their own folder somewhere that you will be able to locate them later.

Make sure you have rebooted in Normal Mode (do not open any other processes. Also have only ONE Internet Explorer browser window open!!!)

    - Run Process Explorer

In the top section of the Process Explorer screen double click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on each instance of ddccy.dll once and then click the kill button. After you have killed all of the ddccy.dll under winlogon click ok. (If you do not find the dll, just continue on.)

Next double click on explorer.exe and again click once on each instance of ddccy.dll and kill it. (If you do not find the dll, just continue on.)
Next double click on iexplore.exe and again click once on each instance of ddccy.dll and kill it. (If you do not find the dll, just continue on.)

    Now just exit Process Explorer.

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7DA39570-5FD2-4f18-94B4-20730CB3F727} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\tolfyhmf.dll (file missing)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {B1AACF8D-CAB0-4146-BF22-14BDD9BBA030} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddccy.dll
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DllRunning] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\vrtdlktj.dll",setvm
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: ddccy - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddccy.dll

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now run Pocket Killbox by doubleclicking on killbox.exe
Choose Tools > Delete Temp Files and click Delete Selected Temp Files.
Then after it deletes the files click the Exit (Save Settings) button.
NOTE: Pocket Killbox will only list the added files it is able to find on the system. So when you do the below, if some files do not show in the list after pasting them in, just continue.

    Select:
    • Delete on Reboot
    • then Click on the All Files button.
    • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    E:\Documents and Settings\Ian Stephens\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\FO5FIHLG\channels_02[1].gif
    E:\Documents and Settings\Petra Stephens\Local Settings\Temp\Install-Emoticons.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddccy.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\yccdd.tmp
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\aqwurevg.ini
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\clcfdeor.ini
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\fbsbuirm.ini
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\fjlacwmv.ini
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\gctnsnrq.ini
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\insnmujt.ini
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\jtkldtrv.ini
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\xcsqldel.ini
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\xrdrlxci.ini
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\yccdd.ini
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\yccdd.ini2
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\vrtdlktj.dll

    • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
    • Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt.
If you receive a PendingFileRenameOperations prompt, just click OK to continue (But please let me know if you receive this message!).

If Killbox does not reboot just reboot your PC yourself.

After reboot locate the below folder and delete if found:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Ian\Local Settings\Application Data\Sunbelt Software
    C:\Program Files\Sunbelt Software

Also delete all files and subfolders in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp
    C:\Documents and Settings\Ian\Local Settings\Temp

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. GetRunKey
    2. ShowNew
    3. HJT
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 1 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

    Hello,

Thanks for the recommendations, I'll work through these items over the next few days. In response to your question regarding the origin of the files, these were registry backups done by Ccleaner when I did a registry check and fix (maybe I shouldn't have?).
I'll drop an update post on the thread once I've carried out the instructions. Thanks again.

    Regards,
    Ians

    Hi Chaslang,

I've followed your latest instructions and all seems to be quite stable at the moment (need to give it a day or two of running). The PC seems to have picked up some speed as well. A few observations...

1)To your question: "If you receive a PendingFileRenameOperations prompt, just click OK to continue (But please let me know if you receive this message!)"
    The Prompt was not seen.

    2)On re-boot, I get a Windows pop-up message box:
    __________________________________________
    Rundll
    Error Loading: C:\windows\system32\vrtdlktj.dll

    Specified Module cannot be found
    __________________________________________

    with an "OK" button

Click the button and message goes away with no adverse effects seen
Looks like the same reg key removed with hijackthis, per earlier instructions

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DllRunning] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\vrtdlktj.dll",setvm

    3) I removed Kazaa on one account. I then noticed later on it was also active on another account after I ran the attached logs. I uninstalled it there as well.

    4) Can you recommend any safer alternative to messenger. It's my teenagers (plural) request.

The latest log files are attached for your reference. Thanks again for your valued assistance.

    Regards,
    Ians

First a note! You must always run steps in the exact order specified. Your HJT log was obtain before the other logs and it was also obtained before CounterSpy was uninstalled. HJT was the last thing I asked for and uninstalling CounterSpy was the second (right after uninstall My Kazaa Gold which still appears in the uninstall list! Are you sure it was uninstalled? Check ALL user accounts.)

The program I had you run was for removing Windows Messenger which is a frequent cause of popups. Also this program is rarely used. Do not confuse it with MSN Messenger or any other instant messenger program. Exactly what were your daughter using? MSN Messenger would be fine and so would any of the other ones mention in this download page: http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads33.html

Let's continue with your cleanup! A couple of new bad files showed up.

First make sure you have verified the My Kazaa Gold does not show up in Add/Remove Programs for any user accounts (including the Administrator account which you will only see when you boot in safe mode.)

Since your HJT log was obtained in the wrong order, I'm not sure what really remains to be fixed or not so some items I'm having you do now may no longer be valid. You need to check anyway.

Make sure you have rebooted in Normal Mode (do not open any other processes)

Also make sure that one and only one Internet Explorer browser is opened up

    - Run Process Explorer

In the top section of the Process Explorer screen double click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on each instance of ddccy.dll once and then click the kill button. After you have killed all of the ddccy.dll under winlogon click ok. (If you do not find the dll, just continue on.)

Now repeat the above step for the below DLLs (If you do not find the dll, just continue on):
    aotgcfme.dll
    phnlmhpd.dll

Next double click on explorer.exe and again click once on each instance of ddccy.dll and kill it. (If you do not find the dll, just continue on.)

Now repeat the above step for the below DLLs (If you do not find the dll, just continue on):
    aotgcfme.dll
    phnlmhpd.dll

Next double click on iexplore.exe and again click once on each instance of winhab32.dll and kill it. (If you do not find the dll, just continue on.)

Now repeat the above step for the below DLLs (If you do not find the dll, just continue on):
    aotgcfme.dll
    phnlmhpd.dll

    Now just exit Process Explorer.

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {69255520-6894-4CC2-B043-9A036AC86EE1} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddccy.dll
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7DA39570-5FD2-4f18-94B4-20730CB3F727} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\tolfyhmf.dll (file missing)

    • First select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    • Now select Tools > Delete Temp Files and click Delete Selected Temp Files.
    • Then after it deletes the files click the Exit (Save Settings) button.
NOTE: Pocket Killbox will only list the added files it is able to find on the system. So when you do the below, if some files do not show in the list after pasting them in, just continue.

    Now Select the following:
    • Delete on Reboot
    • then Click on the All Files button.
    • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\aotgcfme.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\phnlmhpd.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddccy.dll
    • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
    • Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt.
If you receive a PendingFileRenameOperations prompt, just click OK to continue (But only if this message does occur, please let me know!).

If Killbox does not reboot just reboot your PC yourself.

After reboot locate the below folder and delete if found:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Ian\Local Settings\Application Data\Sunbelt Software
    C:\Program Files\My Kazaa Gold

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. GetRunKey
    2. ShowNew
    3. HJT
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Chaslang,

    1) Found an additional installation of kazzaGold on another account. I uninstalled it. Checked all other accounts to confirm no further installations of Kazaa present.

    2) Ran Process Explorer and checked each of the following processes
    winlogon.exe
    explorer.exe
    iexplorer.exe

    for following threads:
    ddccy.dll
    aotgcfme.dll
    phnlmhpd.dll

Result: Did not find any trace of these threads on any of the three processess.

    3) Ran HijackThis and searched for the following lines:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {69255520-6894-4CC2-B043-9A036AC86EE1} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddccy.dll
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7DA39570-5FD2-4f18-94B4-20730CB3F727} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\tolfyhmf.dll (file missing)
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: ddccy - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddccy.dll

Result: No instances of these lines were found (see hijackThis.log), exited HJT.

    4) Created registry file fixme.reg with the following content:

    REGEDIT4

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\My Kazaa Gold]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\aotgcfme]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\phnlmhpd]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\ddccy]

Result: Ran fixme.reg and added successfully added content to registry

    5) Ran Killbox.exe:
    Deleted All Backups
    Deleted Temp Files
After temp files deleted clicked the Exit (Save Settings) button.

Copied and pasted following paths into file menu:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\aotgcfme.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\phnlmhpd.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddccy.dll

Clicked the red-and-white Delete File button.
Clicked Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt.

If you receive a PendingFileRenameOperations prompt, just click OK to continue (But only if this message does occur, please let me know!) - Did not receive message. Killbox rebooted PC successfully.

    6) Observation: Once PC re-booted, the following POP-UP appeared again: (similar observeration to my update of 1/12/2007)
    ______________________________________________
    _RUNDLL_______________________________________

    Error loading C:\WINDOWS\System32\vrtdlktj.dll

The specified module could not be found.

    OK
    _______________________________________________

Clicked OK and the message goes away.

    7) After reboot, locate the following folders and delete if found:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Ian\Local Settings\Application Data\Sunbelt Software
    C:\Program Files\My Kazaa Gold

Result: No files found (searched entire PC)

    8) Ccleaner
    Ran Ccleaner and cleared files.

    9)New logs attached:
    GetRunKey
    ShowNew
    HJT

    Conclusion:
So far, everything is significantly better than it was a week ago, no WinAntivirus2007 pop ups in browser, no hijacks when searching on google. Looking great!

Run HijackThis and fix the below line:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DllRunning] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\vrtdlktj.dll",setvm

    Now exit HijackThis.

Not True! The first one exists. See your newfiles.txt log. Don't use Search. Just navigate to the below folder and delete it with Windows Explorer.

    C:\Documents and Settings\Ian\Local Settings\Application Data\Sunbelt Software

Now reboot and make sure your popup message is gone! It should be!

Attach a final log from ShowNew!

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix you can delete the ComboFix.exe file and associated C:\combofix.txt log that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    5. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    6. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    7. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    8. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

  10. Ians

All instructions completed; however, the Rundll pop-up still occurs randomly. Additional steps taken to diagnose are as follows:
1)Ran HiJackThis, selected the associated line item and selected fix. Re-boot and pop-up re-occurs

2)Ran Ccleaner for registry on all user accounts, selected fix. Ccleaner reports issue fixed, but the pop-up still occurs.

    3) the message traces to registry path: HKLM/software/microsoft/windows/currentVersion/Dllrunning
the data key (DllRunning) content is: rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\vrtdlktj.dll",setvm

The appearance of the pop-up seems random on any given user account. When the pop-up DID NOT appear, a registry check shows the entry was not present (expected behaviour); however it's re-appearance into the registry is random and (at this point) unpredictable as I have not recognized any disearnable pattern at this point in time.

On the administrator account, I opened the registry and manually deleted this data key and closed the registry. In some instances, the deletion was successful; hence a successful re-boot without the pop-up occurs.
In other instances when attempted to delete the key, it appeared again, immediately after reopening the registry to check for it's presence (strange).

I searched the registry to determine if there was another entry that perhaps may have been working to prevent such deletion of the first key, no other related entry to "vrtdlktj.dll" was found.

    4) I've attached the logs for HiJackThis, Getrunkey and ShowNew for reference. The HiJackThis log still shows the Vrtdlktj entry, as anticipated.

Many thanks for the assistance you've provided, the system is running very well, despite this mysterious pop-up. Any additional thoughts or suggestions on the pop-up issue would be sincerely appreciated. This has been a valuable learning exercise.

    Best Regards,
    Ians

You still did not attach a HijackThis log! But don't do that yet! Your log from GetRunKey indicates you did not fix that O4 line I gave you in message # 9. Do the below.

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
The use Pocket Killbox to make sure the below file is deleted:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\vrtdlktj.dll

    Then reboot your PC!

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. GetRunKey
    2. ShowNew
    3. HJT
