    Hello !

I've read the forum post "How to Protect yourself from malware!".

I guess what I would like to know, which I don't find specifically mentioned, is what is the best way to 'scan' a single file before you run it.

For example, if you have a single executeable file or a .zip file (theoretically of various sizes like 40 kb to 4 GB) that you would like to scan before you ever run it instead of just running, or opening, it and relying on the auto-protection from whichever Anti-Virus/Spyware program you have installed.

I know that my particular antivirus program adds a command to right-clicking files to allow "Scan for Viruses". But I just don't feel confident that this is all I can do.

Thank you for any recommendations :major

What anti-virus software are you using. Most will scan single files and are pretty reliable. But be aware that new viruses come out all the time and it takes the companies a while to catch up ...so keep it updated and you should be safe ...assuming you are practicing safe surfing and downloading from reputable site...Like MG's!!

I have been using Symantec Antivirus, Corporate Edition v10.1 which I had got from a previous job. But I am considering checking out Avast Home Edition since I can no longer obtain new (free) versions of the symantec software.

I am religious about keeping definitions up to date btw.

I almost always do; however, I can't help but to check out something from time to time that is from a potentially "shady" source. So, that's why I'm just trying to be as careful as possible. But I understand that any consequences of such are entirely my responsibility.

    Thank you for your advice!

No problem ...symatec corporate is good ...avast will be also ...it would behove you to set a system restore point before opening any software downloads from the "shady" sources.
