I am a bit weary of trying the Free Window Registry Repair 1.1 with the low rating it's getting. Does anyone know why it is so low?

No, wondered myself, I use the one in CCleaner, keep in mind the registry as a perfomance tweak is heavily overrated, so dont put too much emphasis on it. :)

Congrats on spotting the low rating.
It is always worth taking the rating into consideration before installing any program.
I list the programs from the MG front page, I don't always try them out.

Check out http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads15.html for lots of Regisrty utilities, both free and $$$. the choice is yours, of course. Bazza

My $.02 .. I tried the Comodo Firewall on my home computer (eMachine T1090) which is slow to begin with 128k RAM and 900 mhz). Take about 5 minutes to do stuff after loading up. I uninstalled Zonealarm, and installed Comodo. Boot time increased, wife and son complained. I uninstalled and reinstalled Zonealarm. Maybe a good program, probably not recommended for older computers.

Thanks for the feedback, but please spend $$$ for some more RAM for your eMachine.

Any manufacturer/ reseller who sells PC's with only 128 megs of RAM should be taken to task.

Even W98SE will benefit from more than 128 megs, IMHO.

Check out www.crucial.com for an on-line scan of your PC. It will tell you what make and specs of RAM you have, how much more can be fitted, and even suggest where to buy, and $$$, for additional RAM.

My kids had older eMachines (T1855) that ran Windows ME and came with 128mbs of ram and an 850MHZ Celeron . . . they were given to understand via the paperwork with the computer that the motherboard wouldn't support more ram then that - I found that hard to believe, but they were sure of their information, as they really wanted to up the ram. I never tried to verify this, as they stopped using these a short time later, but you might want to do some research if thinking of getting more ram.

    May require a BIOS upgrade?

Naturally, their motherboards only had two ram slots, and both were filled with 64mb ram chips . . . rolleyes

Bazza and Natakel - I did some checking on the computer a while back .... can go up to 256k RAM. It's a matter of $$ (realize it's not that much to upgrade). But having a new home and fixing it up have more priority. The confounded CD-ROM drive keeps acting up - not being recognized, then will later. We do know we need to replace the 'puter. But we'll just have to wait it out for now. Thanks. :)

Visit www.crucial.com as I suggested earlier.
Write down exactly what RAM you have, and what RAM you would like to install (full specs, etc).

    Then go to http://forums.majorgeeks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=28

    MG's Buy and Sell forum.

Explain your $$$ position and as it is probably older RAM you need, a kind MG member might even donate (or sell very cheap) the RAM that you need.

Post a link here to guide people to your advert in Buy and Sell, as not everyone checks out Buy and Sell on a regular basis. Hope this works for you. Keep us informed. Bazza

Thanks, Bazza. Will check out the site at home (I'm at work now). We got the eMachine about 3-4 years ago. At the time we weren't considering internet connectivity (living on a budget) just learning software for our son which met our needs. Now that we are connected using the low end of DSL, and having ZA and Antivir installed, that's where it get slowed down.

However, the intent of my original post was for those who have older/slower machines, using Comodo firewall may not be the best thing to use. ZA works well.

I've been checking out the HD scanner you told me about Bazza....I like it. not sure which is better, that or the one from Jam (has more features) but it helped me make a decision about dumping wordperfect and installing abiword... I only use the word processor for writing poems anyway

Sorry about that. MG had some trouble with 404 errors. I had just cut and pasted the links from the MG front page as I usually do. If you are still interested in the programs I listed, go to www.majorgeeks.com. Scroll down to the Search box on the left hand side and type the program name there.

Or try my custom search at http://www.google.com/custom?domain...V:#336699;VLC:663399;AH:center;BGC:FFFFFF;LBG

Just delete "101 clips" and enter the program you wish to search for. Bazza
