none of my usb drives are working, not even the ones on the MOBO. they wont work for the mouse, a pen drive, or ipod. i dont know what to do. i have uninstalled all of them then serched for new hardware and let windows install them. i also restored a registry backup from a couple of weeks ago. after that i even reinstalled windows xp and still none of them work. what is going on here?

I assume you mean usb ports? If so it is difficult to know. Have you reinstalled the original drivers, is there a yellow hardware not working symbol next to the USBs in the device manager or do they just not show?

slots, ports, tomato, tomoto. yes i reinstalled the original rivers after a clean install of xp. and they do show up in device manager without the not working symbol they are getting power to because when i plug in an ipod the ipod does charge but the pc does not recognize it.

I had a similar problem, I got power to the usb, and no yellow exclamation marks inthe DM, but it would not recognise any device. It was really strange because it had worked fine prior to that point. It turned out that even though everything got power, it was an underpowered psu that was the problem. I replaced the psu and everything was fine. Still dont get why that happened.

that is strange. do you think i could have an underpowered PSU? is there any way i can test this? maybe disable/unhook vid card and use onboard?

    heres a system report.

Thats the thing, I have no idea at all why this happened. It does not make sense. I had not added anything to the system, the usb's just stopped working. I recall it was a 350 watt PSU which I replaced with a 500 watt which I had planned to do anyway and then voila. I dont know if this is the same as your problem, nor how to check it. I am guessing you have onboard usb and a usb card so maybe removing the usb card and the vid card might be enough to test the psu. But as I dont know how much more power it took to jump the usb's back into life on my system, I dont know if this will work. But its gotta be worth a try.

yea i guess it is worth a try. it still just doesnt make any sense they were working fine with my set up for a long long time. but when i have the chance i will give it a shot.

Hi there i have had the same problem before theway i fixed it is with a usb v2.0 mass storage driver.

I would of send you my copy of the driver but even when i zip the file to rar it is still 3.9 mb big way to big to attach to the forums. If you would like to try the driver i have for the mas storage devicers v2.0 send me a PM with your email and i will send it to you that way. i would of posted in a P2P site but i am on dial up and my line cuts out every 4 hours.

If you do not want me to send you the file thats ok but you will have to try and find one online in a search engine type in like e.g v2.0 mass storage driver, lots of companys make them but i know mine works well on 98 and XP.

Also look in control panel/system click on it, that should bring up a window called systems properties go to hardware click on device manager go down to universal serial bus controllers and have a look there to see if all the drivers are installed like Pci to usb controllers ,and ect.
I say this as sometimes when people build a computer them self they forget to put in all the motherboard drivers witch bridge the hardware so they can communicate as they will get power to them parts as it is still powered by the system but the parts can not talk to each other.

Anyway best of luck and hope this might help. ;)
