Can anyone alleviate my suspicions?

Hi, I have a couple of questions about security and viruses.

I have just split with my boyfriend who knows a bit about computers and I have suspicions that there is a possibilty that he could somehow know who i talk to on messenger and what is said. There are comments he has made that he could only know if he knew what I had written on messenger (could be coincidence though) and he has implied to me before that he knew how to track messenger, but i just thought he was showing off.

If this is the case how far could someone go if they can somehow track your movements on your pc and what can be done about it.

He also put some memory in my computer and took out the old memory which he put in a friends computer. Her computer then got a really really nasty virus a couple of days later, when she has never had a problem before. He went a few days later and spent a good few hours sorting out her virus (why he would do this I dont really know) but she told me recently that her computer was still playing up so she took it to PC world (who I realise dont always know what they are talking about) who told her the virus wasnt completely gone and that it had got into her PC on the memory. This being the memory that came out of my pc fine and into hers infected.

I know this all sounds a bit daft but I am just wondering, I am not usually a suspicious person and I am kind of hoping you will all point and laugh at me for being so silly.

Thanks for bothering to read my paranoid mutterings,

    ernielou

Oh I forgot to add that I got the upgrade of internet explorer around the same time he started mucking about with my computer and now usually when i close explorer I get 2 message boxes, the first one says

the exception unknown software exception (0x0eedfade) occured int he application at location 0x7c812a5b

    followed by:

    runtime error 217 at 032BF48E

I have always presumed it was the upgrade but wonder if it is to do with something else now as whenever I mentioned it to him he didnt seem interested and usually if a computer did something odd he would sit tinkering for hours until he found out why, which i always thought was odd for him to not try to find out what it was.

If he knows your login ID and passwords he could be logging in as you. Change your password and ID if necessary. He could also have installed a keylogger on your PC or other software to get remote access to your PC. SOme keyloggers are easy to find and remove. Better commercial packages can be almost impossible to remove. Change all passwords on your PC and don't forget to change the Administrator account (only seen in safe boot mode) password too. Also make sure the Guest account is disabled.

This is not possible and even people at PC World could not be that stupid. When you remove the RAM components from your PC, they have no power and all contents are erased. Even when you shutdown your PC, RAM contents are erased. Devices like a USB flash drive can maintain contents without power, but not your RAM.

If you want to check your PC for malware, we can do that. Just continue to the below.

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, renaming, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.

    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
      • CounterSpy
      • AVG Antispyware log - ONLY IF NEEDED you were not able to run CounterSpy
      • Bitdefender - from step 6
      • Panda Scan - from step 6
      • runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
      • newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
      • HijackThis
NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!

thanks for your help, I have just gone to change the passwords and I have an account in there that I didnt set up, called SQLdebugger which is a limited account and is password protected.

I am doing a software development course at the moment, (only just started) and have had to install pascal, vb.net and macromedia, so could it be something to do with those applications?

    Thanks

thank you, umm... i think i need a slap...i have lifted the pasword off it about two minutes ago, cos i was fiddling and couldnt understand why it wasnt coming up on the user accounts screen.

I am having trouble with my vb.net and getting stuff to run anyway although that may be me, do I have to re-install vb.net now or can i fix it?

I should not be allowed near computers  sorry

I have read that again, twice, and am still not quite sure whether I actually need it or not or what it is, when i first read it i thought vb.net wouldnt work at all without it, but now i am not sure whether it matters.

You are asking questions about topics that are not malware related. I'm sorry but we do not have time to work non-malware related problems in this forum. We are just too busy with malware to do that. You can ask questions like those in the Software Forum.

If you want to check for malware that you boyfriend may have left on your PC then complete the steps I gave to you.
