The answer on how it works is that both tanks are at the same level and the column of water though higher would have an equal force on both ends from draining. Take a glass of water and quickly invert it over a sink full of water and the glass will stay full. Professor Gray will now leave:D Cool link Calltaker, hey my wife would like to talk to you about the Game link you posted:mad :mad Man I have wasted hours on that, see Viper has been too;)

From somoeone with a fish tank.... if you are careful about how many and what type of fish you put in the take, you should be able to get by with just water changes. Our fish thrive, we just let the water evap dawn, then refill when it gets aboutn 1/2 way down. And our tank is crytsal clear.

Of course, I know what you eman, can you imagine having to drain that beast????? Then refill it!!!

Same here, Calltaker. I have had fish tanks off and on for decades and as long as you have decent filtration, an under-gravel filter, and you don't over-feed you should only rarely have to clean it.

Another consideration is, when starting a tank, buy a commercially available additive which "starts" the bacteria that will break down the fish waste. I once had a tank set up for three years. Never had to clean it. When I took it down the area below the under-gravel filter was full of a brown sludge which made a decent flower fertilizer.

I'm still agog at how the system shown in the link is set up though . . .

hope i'm not detracting from the post - I could use some advise, I have 2 Betta's in a sm. tank w/a divider. when I feed the they get so worked up think the other fish is getting the food they knock most of it to the bottom, gets nasty, cloudy have to clean it quit often.

maybe get one of those sucker fish? in my 8th grade class a while back we had a beta along with quite a few other fist (neon tetras, frogs, some weird orange fish) and it kept things clean quite nicely and didnt cause problems with the beta
