I've been having ongoing major problems with my system for several weeks. It started with the well known "Generic Host Process for Win32 services, Data Execution Prevention" error message and many other problems including errror messages when I shut down such as "msiexec.exeDLL failed to initialize". I also had a flashing mouse pointer for a while and then a flashing hour glass next to the mouse. I asked Microsoft for help and the "Generic Host Process for Win32 services, Data Execution Prevention" error message was fixed (although I am worried that only worked because he had me turn off Data Execution Prevention under Device Manager. The flashing mouse pointer and flashing hour glass now also seem to be gone. But I'm having all sorts of problems like Outlook and Word locking up and opening intermittently, a duplicate listing of Internet Explore and Outlook when I click on the Green Start button on the bottom left side of the screen but only intermittently, my screen saver completely freezes up, and ocassionally get a message about "insufficeint resources" when I attempt to go to a different web page. Finally, intermittently at the bottom of the screen, a small white rectangle appears for a few secs and then disappears like a program or web page is trying to open.

My computer had been running flawlessly for about 9 months. (XP Home edition, Service Pack 2, AMD Athlon 64 2.41 Ghz, 2 Gb RAM, ATI Radeon X1800XL PCI, Soundblaster Audigy 2ZS, Pextor SATA DVD, Logitech wireless mouse/keyboard, Dell 2405 FPW monitor.

I've run Mcaffee antiviral and various antispyware inlcuding SpyWare Doctor previously. Before posting this thread I followed ALL of the instructions posted on this site and have included 3 of the scans in this email and will send the remaining 3 scans in the next email.

Please help if you can. David

I'm just posting the remaining 3 logs that could not be attached to my initial email. Thanks. David

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

Please do not post messages (these are forum messages, not emails) in a new thread (a thread is this what you started when you opened your first message). All the messages together constitute a thread! All communication for this current problem you are having belong in this thread.

I merged your other message into this thread.

I don't think we are going to find malware to be the cause of any of your problems!

Let's fix a bunch of misc non-malware related stuff and see what effect this has.

First uninstall the CounterSpy trial since we are finished with it and I don't want it to conflict with your Spyware Doctor program.

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

The below are a couple of additional items you should consider removing with HJT but these are your choice!

Do you use WinCinema_Manager? It is needed when using the WinDVD Remote Control for WinDVD from Intervideo. It is not really necessary to load this at startup and always have it wasting system resources.
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WINCINEMAMGR] "C:\Program Files\InterVideo\Common\Bin\WinCinemaMgr.exe"

The below is junk from your ISP for support. Did you ever use it? Do you think you will? It has been known to be a resource hog and it clutters up your PC with garbage.
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [tgcmd] C:\Program Files\Support.com\bin\tgcmd.exe /server /startmonitor /deaf

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    Now run Ccleaner.

Now we need to Reset Web Settings:
    1. If you have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, goto step 2. If not, skip to step 3.
    2. Now right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK. Then skip step 3.
    3. If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.
Note for IE 7 users: You need to select Internet Options then the Advanced tab and then Reset Internet Explorer Settings!

    Now reboot in normal mode

Now locate the below leftover folders from CounterSpy and delete ithem:
    C:\Documents and Settings\David\Local Settings\Application Data\Sunbelt Software
    C:\Program Files\Sunbelt Software

Now attach the a new HJT.

Make sure you tell me how things are working now! And don't forget, I did say that your problems are not malware. If you still have problems. You should post in the Software Forum.

Thanks for your help. I followed your instructions exactly and, unfortunately, the computer is still doing the same things, perhaps even a little worse. I am attaching the HJT logfile for you. Any other suggestions?

As I said in my other message, I don't believe your problems are malware. I also doubt that anything we did made your PC worse. If anything, it should make it run better by removing all that unnecessary software. We can try one more scan to look for rootkits, but I don't expect any to be found. Please run the below and attach the requested log:

    Using Sophos Anti-Rootkit

I ran the Sophos scan and it didn't find anything but I've attached the log file here. I had said the computer looked worse because when I was in Outlook I had a problem with the email window that I hadn't seen before. It's probably unrelated to anything we did, as you said. I'm beginning to think that the only way around this mess is to reinstall windows and start from scratch, even though it would be a real pain to do.

I suggest you first post a statement of your problems in the Software Forum and see if you can get any help there first. Make sure you reference this thread so they no you already checked for potential malware problems. It is possible that an uninstall, reboot, and then reinstall of your Office products may help resolve the problems you are having with Outlook and Word.
