    Hi
I am having problems with a friend's Acer Aspire 3000. Windows Update has stopped working. When trying to run WU a message now appears saying "files required to use Windows Update are no longer registered or installed on your computer".

An option is provided to reinstall the files, which when used seems to actually do things, but always end up coming back to the same message as above.

I have followed chaslang's extensive Read and Run Me First instructions under the malware forum. None of the recommended tools appear to have found any form of malware, yet.

I have attached some log files as a result of using the tools in the instructions above.

There are 3 files attached to this post, I'll do a second post for the other two logs.

    In response to your PM:

You did not post your request for help in the Malware Forum where one of us would have commented on it by now. You posted in the Software Forum. However, your problems are not due to malware anyway. Windows Update problem rarely are but they can be.

Did you try the suggestion already posted in message # 3? Since you did not respond,,why would you expect anyone else to?

    Hi

What you may need to do is to re-register some .DLL files that WU uses, to do this follow the below,

Click Start > Run and enter ( or copy and paste the bold commands below ) the command below into the Run box then click OK

    regsvr32 wuapi.dll

You should then receive a message to say it was successful, then do the same for all of the below one by one.

    regsvr32 wups.dll

    regsvr32 wuaueng.dll

    regsvr32 wucltui.dll

    regsvr32 atl.dll

    regsvr32 msxml3.dll

go back to Windows Update or Microsoft Update and try again.

Brilliant! That's fixed the problem thanks.
Any idea what might cause this?

Hi good, glad that was the fix, as to why, it could be a multitude of things that cause this from Malware to a corrupted or bad install of an update and if one of the above .dlls gets un-registered you get errors or a non-functioning windows update.
