need a real power supply now

Friends,

I upgraded my current computer about 6 months ago, including my video card to PCIe. While I did recognize that the crappy 350W power supply that came with my case wouldn't cut it anymore, I foolishly went to my local computer parts store and let them sell me the only 500W unit they had on their shelf. This unit recently died and I am now ready to correct this error. Anybody have some recommendations? I'm willing to put some money into this.

media drive: LITEON SOHW-812S 8X8 DVD RW Dual
500W power supply - dead

 

I have had to replace a half a dozen power supplies over the last few years. For what is worth, MadDog brand has been the one that I have had the most luck with so far.

 

Stick with the big hardware companies that are known for quality components. Antec have been making good PSU's for ages, Corsair have just started (but apparently done a very good job), Zalman etc.

I've heard good things about Antec Truepower and Neo HE PSU's (personally I bought a Phantom 500 and love it).

Another one that has stood the test of time and is a little less expensive is THERMALTAKE, just avoid the 500W one that is making the circuit that is FREE (after Rebate). It's worth nothing, that's why they charge nothing
