I tried to install old scanner software onto my comp and it messed it up( scanner is from 1998).This happened to my dads comp and also my gf's comp so its def the cd. Anyways, So I uninstalled the software by starting windows in safe mode, To cut to the chase, in the end I must have deleted something else because I get this message when windows starts to load:

    "explorer.exe. unable to locate component
This app. has failed to start because Normalize.dll was not found."

Here is what I have tried so far with no luck:

Started the comp in safe mode then selecting 'start comp.using last known successful configuration'

Used the original windows xp disk to try and repair windows.
    ^^^^^^^
...This didn't work, 39 minutes into fixing windows, the comp restarts and the cycle continues. I would go through the whole repair process but it would stop abruptly and reboot.

I can't sign onto my name, I am using my gf's comp.

What the F should I do???

I guess the real problem for me now is to load windows xp again.

I have booted the comp from the windows xp cd and have gone to the repair option. The thing is I have no idea what the admin password is. I don't remember making one because I got xp a while ago.

    Ok..Update

I managed to install windows XP again. I installed it over the top of my old messed up windows XP.

All my information is lost, I have to start from scratch. If I click on my hard drive icon I can see my old folder with all my movies and pics and pretty much everything. When I click on that folder, it says that access is denied WTF!?

Also, when I am online and scrolling down, it seems really slow and kind of just wont let me scroll freely. I dont know how to describe it, it's like it's struggling to scroll.

Another thing is: When I am writing emails and such, it says that I am exiting a secure connection and exiting the encrypted area and a 3rd party can view. What the hell is that? That only happens when I am using a public computer.

I guess my question is, how can I get all my old settings and documents bacK?

1st question, to access those folders and files as you have reinstalled XP again and the new install has a new ID string so you have to take ownership of the files/folders........ instructions on how to do this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421

2nd question, struggling to scroll is most likely you will need to install the motherboard chipset drivers then the graphic card drivers.

3rd question, if this is online emails then that is normal as your leaving a secure server and defaultly the browser will throw that warning up just click the do not remind me again box.... basically your leaving the secure area and any data from that point on maybe seen by 3rd parties.

I did what you said and it seemed like it was going to work but no and behold it still wont let me open them.

Also, I can't find my driver disks anywhere. I am afraid that my dad may have thrown them out. Right now I am trying to find the drivers online for my video card, motherboard, monitor and so on and so forth. This is making me really depressed that my comp was fine 24 hrs ago and now it is totally messed up!!!
