A malware problem.

Hello! I recently got a virus or some other such thing by mistakingly clicking on a link in MSN conversation. From what I can tell, the damage that it has done was this: completely erased my System restore, changed my homepage, and made pop-ups come up with every new IE page I would open. As well, when I would click on some links, such as the download of HJT, it would close the browser, and when I've been trying to change msconfig, it would close the window as well, although I had a very small amount of time to actually be able to change what I needed.

After following the reccomended procedure from 'READ AND RUN ME FIRST', and also manually deleting PeDevice and Ipwindows, both of which have only appeared after the infection in my Program Files, I got rid of the pop-ups, and my homepage doesn't change anymore. However, my internet is still slow, and certain things don't work. For example, both bitdefender and Panda didn't work for me. I also had to rename the hijack this folder, because the original text document closes eery time I try to open it within a few seconds.

    Thank you for your time!

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

You have a bunch of problems!

Download HOSTER and then follow the below steps.
    • Unzip Hoster to a convenient folder such as C:\Hoster
    • Run Hoster.exe, click Restore Microsoft's Hosts File and then click OK.
    • Click the X to exit the program
Now we need to remove a malware system service. Ignore any error messages and just keep on going!
    • Click on Start, then Run ... type services.msc into the box that opens up, and press 'OK'.
    • On the page that opens, scroll down to Client IP-IPX
    • then right click the entry, select Properties and press Stop Service.
    • When it shows that it is stopped, next please set the Start-up Type to 'Disabled'.
    • Click OK until you get back to Windows.
    • Next, run HJT, but instead of scanning, click on the None of the above, just start the program button at the bottom of the choices.
    • At the lower right, click on the Config button
    • Then click the Misc tools button
    • Select Delete an NT Service
    • Copy/pasteClient IP-IPX into the box that opens, and press OK
    • If you receive any error messages just ignore them and continue.
    • Now exit HJT but do not reboot when it tells you it needs to. We will do that further down after running HJT again to fix some other items.
Uninstall the below old versions of software:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 3
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03

Continue by downloading a tool we will need - Pocket KillBox

Save it to its own folder somewhere that you will be able to locate it later.

Please run HijackThis and click on the Open the Misc Tools Section button on the open page. Then select Open process manager on the left-hand side. Look for the following process (or processes) and one at a time kill them by selecting it and then click Kill process. Then click yes.

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\eltbmjchen\winlogon.exe

After killing all the above processes, click Back.
Then please click Scan and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell.ca/myway
    F3 - REG:win.ini: load=C:\WINDOWS\system32\eltbmjchen\winlogon.exe
    F3 - REG:win.ini: run=C:\WINDOWS\system32\eltbmjchen\winlogon.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RealTray] C:\Program Files\Real\RealPlayer\RealPlay.exe SYSTEMBOOTHIDEPLAYER
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now run Pocket Killbox by doubleclicking on killbox.exe
Choose Tools > Delete Temp Files and click Delete Selected Temp Files.
Then after it deletes the files click the Exit (Save Settings) button.
NOTE: Pocket Killbox will only list the added files it is able to find on the system. So when you do the below, if some files do not show in the list after pasting them in, just continue.

    Select:
    • Delete on Reboot
    • then Click on the All Files button.
    • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchosts.exe
    c:\windows\system32\unsvchosts.lzma
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\C21CB792F4.sys
    c:\windows\system32\atmtd.dll
    c:\windows\system32\atmtd.dll._
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\eltbmjchen\winlogon.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\VGFuaWEgWWF2b3Jza2E\asappsrv.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\VGFuaWEgWWF2b3Jza2E\command.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.20070128-225158.backup
    • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
    • Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt.
If you receive a PendingFileRenameOperations prompt, just click OK to continue (But please let me know if you receive this message!).
If Killbox does not reboot just reboot your PC yourself.
After reboot locate the below folder and delete if found:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\eltbmjchen

Also delete all files and subfolders in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp
    C:\Documents and Settings\Tania Yavorska\Local Settings\Temp\

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. GetRunKey
    2. ShowNew
    3. HJT
Make sure you tell me how things are working now! I fully expect the CMDSERVICE registry keys to come back. They normally do. If so, we will get them using a special procedure.

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 1 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

Thank you for your reply!! I've tried to follow the procedure, but the second step of turning off the Client IP-IPX doesn't work. When I click on properties, a message box come up that reads : "A required entry in registry is missing, or attempt to overwrite has failed" or something along those lines. In fact, the whole window closes within a couple seconds, so I cannot even always get as far as finding 'Client IP-IPX' in the list. The same thing happens when I run HJT: I've tried to do the step of deleting Client IP -IPX, however once again the program just doesn't run long enough for me to do it.

I also want to add that this morning I ran CounterSpy again, although not in safe mode, and I am attaching the results. The first one I just did a quick check, and since it turned up some harmful stuff, I ran a full check too.

Hoster seems to have worked.. I've attached the new HJT log.

Yes this is all part of the infection ( called Chode - which you will notice CounterSpy is also detecting) you have. It has set things to block any form of registry editing and that is why you are having problems running everything.

Try to do as much of my other steps as you can any way. Just note what you could not do and tell me later, but try all steps anyway especially the part with kill box to delete files. If it can delete some of the bad files, we may be able to get other things to work.

First of all, after unistalling the old versions of Java, I was able to run Bitdefender and Panda. Apparently one of them helped against whatever was blocking me from running certain programs. I've attached the logs from both of them to this post.

I've followed your remaining instructions with following results:

    1. HOSTER - done

    2. Clicking on properties of CLIENT IP-IPX returns: "Configuration Manager: A required entry in the registry is missing or an attempt to write to the registry failed" , "The system cannot find the file specified."

    3. Killing process "C:\WINDOWS\system32\eltbmjchen\winlogon.exe" with Hijack didn't work, because it was not in the list of processes.

    4. Fixing lines R1, F3, and O4 with hijack this - done.

    5. fixME.reg returns that the file "is not a valid win32 application", and as I understand does not write to registry as it should.

    6. C:\WINDOWS\system32\C21CB792F4.sys was deleted using killbox.

    7. C:\WINDOWS\system32\eltbmjchen was not found after rebooting my laptop.

    8. Temporary files were deleted (except for the ones from today).

    9. The new logs are attached.

    10. Everything seems to be working properly!!!!! :D *crosses fingers*

This is why the very first paragraph of step 6 contains the below
Had you followed this instruction then, you would have been that much ahead of the game.

If you click Start, Run and enter regedit and click OK! Does the Windows Registry Editor open up.

Your system is still locking out registry edits and there are multiple things we need to fix in the registry.

Please download and install Registrar Lite Make sure you select a Majorgeeks download link and not the Authors!

We are going to need it later; but quickly just try to run Registrar Lite and see if it runs.

Well, I had followed the instruction about downloading Java. I just haven't uninstalled the older versions, which is why I guess it wasn't working. Sorry, I really did try to follow all the instructions! :(

    And yes, Registry window opens.

Download the attached FixMe.Zip file and extract the fixme.reg file from it to your C:\ folder. Please extract it to this folder to make the next steps easier.

Then run regedit again. Once it opens click File, Import! Now navigate to the c:\fixme.reg file and select it and then click Open to import it. Click Ok to any message about adding it to the registry.

Does this work? If yes, attach a new log from GetRunKey.

Locate the below files and delete them:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Tania Yavorska\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\winlogon.lnk
    C:\WINDOWS\VGFuaWEgWWF2b3Jza2E\p3IRuqH0qqIZvaLWuZH.vbs
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.20070129-131121.backup
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.20070129-131119.backup
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.20070129-131122.backup
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.20070129-131123.backup
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.20070129-131124.backup
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.20070129-131125.backup
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.20070129-131004.backup
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.20070129-131005.backup
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.20070129-131116.backup

Now locate the below folders and delete them:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\{306FEC3B-05D8-1033-0324-061114200002}
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\{C06FEC3B-05D8-1033-0324-061114200002}

Now (if you did not do this already) please download and install Registrar Lite Make sure you select a Majorgeeks download link and not the Authors!

Run Registrar Lite navigate to each of the following keys (one at a time) and take ownership of them (I explained how to do that further down).

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_CMDSERVICE\0000
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_CMDSERVICE
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\Root\LEGACY_CMDSERVICE\0000
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\Root\LEGACY_CMDSERVICE
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet003\Enum\Root\LEGACY_CMDSERVICE\0000
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet003\Enum\Root\LEGACY_CMDSERVICE

To take ownership of the key do the following:
    • Copy & Paste the registry key from above into the Address bar of Registrar Lite and hit the enter key. This will bring you to the registry key.
    • Click-on Security in the top Menu
    • Select Take Ownership
    • Repeat these steps for all of the registry keys given above before continue to the next steps below.
    • Now leave RegistrarLite running and continue
    • Now run the fixME.reg REGISTRY PATCH below in this message.
    • Tell me the results. Any error messages?
    • Now in RegistrarLite click View and then Refresh
    • Now navigate one at a time to each of the above keys we took ownership of to make sure they were deleted.
    • If any of the keys still exist, move on down to PART 2 - Setting Permissions for Everyone below!.
    Here is the Registry Patch

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

PART 2 - Setting Permissions for Everyone
Run the below if some of the registry keys still exist after running the above steps.

Now I want you to use Registar Lite again to navigate to each of the below keys (one at a time) by pasting them into the Address Bar and hitting return. But this time click the Security menu item and select Edit Permissions so we can change permissions to everyone ( I describe this down below the list of registry keys).
After click Edit Permissions , here is what I expect you to see in the Group or user names area of the form:

    Everyone
    SYSTEM

Select Everyone by clicking on it. Now at the bottom in the Permissions box click the check box for Full Control. The click Apply and then OK to get back to the main Registrar Lite screen. Nowright click on the registry key and select Delete. The click View and Refresh. Check to see if the registry key just deleted truly deleted. If so, move on to the next to work thru the whole list. If it does not delete, I want you to boot into safe mode and repeat these exact same steps to see if we can do it from safe mode.

    Then reboot your PC!

Now run GetRunKey again and attach a new log!

Good! Now attach a final log from ShowNew!

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix you can delete the ComboFix.exe file and associated C:\combofix.txt log that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    5. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    6. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    7. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    8. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

I've followed all of the instructions, and ran CounterSpy before turning the system restore back on. It caught two cookies as spyware, which were TribalFusion.com, and 247RealMedia.com. Should I worry about them?

In message number 14 I gave you this link: How to Protect yourself from malware!

I guess you have not followed those instructions yet. Follow those instructions and also be sure to read step 11 in the How to protect thread.

Also Uninstall the Sunbelt CounterSpy trial since we are finished with it now! Then delete the below two folders left behind by the uninstall:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Tania Yavorska\Local Settings\Application Data\Sunbelt Software
    C:\Program Files\Sunbelt Software
