    Who uses "Open Office"?

I see that you can type a document in Open Office and open it in Word -- Can you open Word .doc in Open Office?

Can you take a document from Open Office and create a .pdf file?

I did a search on this forum and found this - someone had a question about their MS license. That's what I'm working on for buying new licenses at work on new pcs.

I have... haven't recently as the release I tried was buggy as heck. Newer releases are much better from what I've heard, but I can't confirm.

Yes, you can, IIRC. This is what attracted me to it in the first place!

Yes, if the application doesn't do it natively, PDF creation apps that we were discussing earlier (PDF Creator comes to mind) should allow you to create the PDFs... not sure about some that were mentioned, but this app installs a printer that you can use from any application to "print" into a PDF file.

Well, that's one reason I'm asking is the guy who mentioned it to me is a complete Linux freak and computer nerd (not Major Geek like some of you guys) so he doesn't explain things well.

I want to be sure this can work well with all the MS / Windows based pcs we have and integrate and read Word .docs and .pdf files we already have years of saved on the server, etc.

Just another opinion: I really like OpenOffice also... and I've also had some very minor Excel .xls problems... but that was 2-3 months ago, before the newer release. The newer version has given me NO trouble, with anything! It's the best thing since shredded lettuce, except OpenOffice is free and shredded lettuce isn't ;)

Make a new thread. Piggybacking onto this one will not provide you any support.

    Thanks.

I used OpenOffice for a year or so in college and its compatibility was pretty good when I saved documents in .doc (Microsoft) format. However, I did have some compatibility issues with the Excel equivalent and some problems with .doc saved format in OpenOffice that gave trouble opened in Microsoft Office. One time I had a real problem with a project I was doing (almost really cost me on a presentation in which tables I inserted did not display correctly- they were jumbled all over)and I got tired of the little things that would not be perfectly compatible. I realized that when documents are very important (such as college papers) it may not be best to put your trust in it fully. With that said, OpenOffice is a fine suite by all measures. It is constantly evolving and getting better. I use MS Office now, but I still have confidence in OpenOffice. It is only getting better.

I now use OpenOffice at my work place in Real Estate. Now I'm looking for a MS Publisher-type that is open source that will allow me to open Publisher files. I currently use WinXP Media on my laptop with no problems in OpenOffice. However, I don't have much use for Excel in what I do so I don't run into any problems.

I've been useing it for a year and love it. I'm sure I'll run into some problems sooner or later but not enough to go and buy an Office disc.

My (not techie) girlfriend didn't even realise that she wasn't in Excel last time she used it so although you will spot differences they are pretty small.

I have used it for a couple of years..and enjoy it

You can open many different document types including word .doc

Creating pdf files is as easy as file>export as pdf... name it and save it

as far as licensing for corporate use I am clueless---

A friend of mine downloaded the 60 day trial of Word just to get her CV done. OO is just great for those of us who hardly ever have the need to write something looking proper to some very powerful features. I just love their spreadsheet!
