was just reading this and just thought with summer coming up in Oz and most people hitting the beaches this is great advice to know:

With recent shark attacks on the rise there is a list of things you can do to make the risk of an attack low.

    Recent Shark Attacks

    http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/770/greatwhiteleapsbd9.jpg
    Great White Leaps

Reduce the chance of a Shark Attack
Always stay in groups since sharks are more likely to attack a solitary individual.
Do not wander too far from shore --- this isolates an individual and additionally places one far away from assistance.
Avoid being in the water during darkness or twilight hours when sharks are most active and have a competitive sensory advantage.
Do not enter the water if bleeding from an open wound or if menstruating --- a shark's olfactory ability is acute.
Wearing shiny jewelry is discouraged because the reflected light resembles the sheen of fish scales.
Avoid waters with known effluents or sewage and those being used by sport or commercial fisherman, especially if there are signs of bait fishes or feeding activity. Diving seabirds are good indicators of such action.
Sightings of porpoises do not indicate the absence of sharks --- both often eat the same food items.
Use extra caution when waters are murky and avoid uneven tanning and bright colored clothing --- sharks see contrast particularly well.
Refrain from excess splashing and do not allow pets in the water because of their erratic movements.
Exercise caution when occupying the area between sandbars or near steep drop offs --- these are favorite hangouts for sharks.
Do not enter the water if sharks are known to be present and evacuate the water if sharks are seen while there. And, of course, do not harass a shark if you see one!

    This is wise advice brksta!

As you may well know, there are many dangers lurking within the waters off the northern tip of OZ!
As well as sharks, we have crocodiles (which are spotted commonly around our beaches moving from river system to river system), box jelly fish, stone fish, blue-ringed octopus, sting rays and many more!
Enough to put you off swimming for life hey......In the words of the 'scared, weird little guys', come to Australia and get killed. lol

Thanks for the appreciated reminder though!

    Regards...

@nitecrawler....Yea i am aware of those dangers although i never realized we had blue-ringed octopus's up our way thanks for the update.

seen a few croc's in Mindil's beach just cruising along also read a few articles of some people finding croc's in there swimming pools. glad that hasn't happened to me, I'd freak out...lol

I like the last sentence about harassment. If you go around harassing sharks you probably deserve to get nibbled on. :)

By far the most dangerous part of swimming at a beach is the drive to, and from, the beach.

You've probably got a better chance of winning the Lotto (Pools) or getting hit by lightning than being attacked by a shark, but the movie Jaws is embedded in the deep recesses of our brains, causing anxiety at the beach.

Still no use tempting fate, and the hints are well worth observing. Bazza

As he said, the chances are so low. You have to keep it in context, you probably won't even see a shark near shore in your whole life. It's just the 1/1000000000000000000000000000 that get it. :p

There’s been a few shark sightings off the west coast of Oz recently. Years back some guy got killed by a shark attack at Cottesloe Beach. Around Perth metro, sharks (the big kind), aren't all that common, though there are always few sightings. Most of the popular beaches have lookouts on the weekends and on holiday season. If the shark siren blows, times to exit the water!

Like a few have said, there's a lot more sharks, not to mention crocks and other nasties up north, fortunately far away from me. We get e few Stonefish and Cobblers in the river, (a type of catfish with poisonous spines behind its gills).

I've seen a Blue Ringed Octopus in South Australia when I first went there. I was extra dumb and picked it up and it on the back of my hand. I didn't realise later, until people told be how deadly that lil’ bitty octopus can be! Luckily they don't usually bite, unless you're hurting them. I never want to put that to the test again.

we have sharks here. not the great white though, mostly tiger, blackfin, (reef sharks, or is that different?), hammerhead, and i dont know what else. i've seen a caught tiger shark. night fishers got it with spears. now theres something i wouldnt want to try!! big...about 8-9 ft. we all ate shark meat for a week. (i was living on the beach at the time). the black fin we see all the time, but the're little..about 4 ft. i once saw a baby hammerhead by the edge of the bay, looking very lost. the kids chanted in hawaiian to it and it turned and swam back out to sea. as far as evolution goes, how did it ever come up with a shape like that!! we also get the very occasional attack, but as previously stated there are much bigger dangers. at least one person a week dies on these roads, which are narrow, winding, and lined either side by lava rock. at least one person a fortnight dies in the sea. sometime ago i actually watched in horror as a man was plucked from the rocks by a wave and dragged into the pounding surf. he was standing next to his child, a boy about 7-8, and the wave left the child standing. they were high on the rocks, not on the shore line. the man died. my daughter has come very close to drowning by getting caught in a rip tide, not something we knew about...dont get a lot of rip tides on the medway, or the south east coast of blighty.

    the whales are back. :)

A friend of mine got hit by a falling power cable once. Oddly he survived with hardly any injuries at all (other than the impact) - unfortunately - and at the time to more concern of him - his laptop didn't.

Sharks are just like any sea life really - they will do what they can to survive and that involves eating things that look like food. I did a lot of stuff about sharks when I did my Diver training and one of the things they said was that once you were fully submerged you don't look at all like food - but if you smell like food (i.e. you're bleeding or have recently bled) then you're pretty much lunch. And that goes for most sea predators, not just sharks.

Not to do with sharks, but. ...For me anyways, I am terrified of Spiders. Yet I am also very intrigued by them. Example, I will approach a spider and stare at it with awe if there is no way it can crawl on me(obviously to bite) .
I also had a friend who was opposite. In British Columbia, in the Okanagan. There are a lot of Black Widows. Their favorite place to live seems to be under the black plastic of hydroponic tomato fields...
Anyhoo, my friend Nick would pull em out, throw them in his mouth and spit em out like some wierd juggling act:eek:!
I wonder if sharks are scared of spiders?
    Krikey!!

Throwing black widow spider into your mouth and spitting them out:eek: and they say good family fun is a thing of the past :D

EDIT are you sure they were black widows, they are only 10mm accross in size

  25. Phantom

    Phantom Brigadier Britches

There's plenty of them (Black Widows) around this neck of the woods at this time of the year (late spring/early summer). Can't say I have the urge to put them in my mouth though. I just zap them with the RAID.

Spiders are cool an' all, but not when I walk into the big ones webs at night. Especially when I don't know where the Hell the occupant is. If I have to walk around the back yard at night, I always take my trusty broomstick along.:D

Still off topic, but nothing beats watching TV at 3 oclock in the morning when outa the corner of yer eye you see a shadow scurry! Last time for me, the "CRITTER" was on my arm chair and jumped to the carpet and bolted( do I stink?) Never seen a man go get his wife in such a hurry!
PS . this sucker was old...size of my hand(all legs and pinky tip size body)...My wife picked it up on a piece of paper and gently let it go on to live outside.......And harass the sharks in the bay across the street!
Did you know that places in the world eat spiders for meals, yip, they are the size of 10 inch dinner plates! They use the fangs for tooth picks!! Apparently, they pet sharks for fun too:D

Rikki, I am glad you pointed that article out. Very true, though I also wonder? Did you know(everyone) that a black Widow can "Usually" only bite a person on thier bum, or privates.. They have teenyweenyiddittybiddy little teeth!! This is a good thing considering somthing the size of a keyboard key can be so toxic. All Black Widows are toxic...north to south.
For my American friends, did you know that there is a desert that streatches from California all the way up to BC Canada? It is Canadas only true desert, it is called the Okanagan(my dogs dont like it...cactus foot is not nice)
I mention the Okanagan because way too many books and references dont include canada. I mean heck its not snowed once yet where I live..
The variety of widow spiders in bc is a dangerous one ...if it could get through skin. There is one of the worlds most venomous spiders, that believe it or not , cross washingtons border into BC! They are called a Brown Recluse ... they do have teeth!
In the okanagan I have seen Preying Mantis at least 7 inches long(most are 3), first time I saw one was in Hawaii. What the hell are they doing in Canada? Read a national geographic, or animal book or whatever, they will tell you we dont have RattleSnakes.....Tell that to my cat that got to close to a water hose(snake was cooling itself? dunno..cat got bit). believe it or not we even have scorpions up here, though I never saw one...thank gawd! then theres the elusive Sasquatch.
Most Sasquatch believe sharks and Americans dont exist....Even Canadians are rarely sighted :D

I grew up in San Diego, did alot of surfing there. The best advice I got was to try and not look like a seal. Which, if you are laying on a board with two arms and two legs in the water, you sure look like one from below. Never did figure that one out. When I was 24 some friends and I were going to go to OZ and did some research. You guys have the most poisonous snakes, spiders, nasty crocs, and who knows whatelse lurking in wait for a meal. Never did go..decided the high desert in Cali. was safer. (rattlesnakes, mountain lions, scorpions, and freezing cold at night) Boy do I miss it. There scariest thing here in in Mich. is deer hunters! Stay out of the woods in Nov.

good point musk. yesterday, my boss heard a shot behind his house.
    You also mentioned mountain Lion.
Did you know that Vancouver Island(canada) has more wild cats than the entire mainland of BC and Alberta combined. It is assumed that there is a cougar for every 10 kilometeres, or 7 miles. even scarier is the fact they dont like cities much....That crowds them more:eek:
Every time this year the news papers spread the word....Beware the Wild Cats, Walk your Children To School Or Drive Them! These cats are elusive! Don't Walk your Dog Without A leash( if it heres a snap in the forest,It's bait) your dog Wont return!
4 years ago, the Interior mind you 74 miles from the us canada border, a cougar attacked a lady on a horse...her children escaped.. she was mauled yet Killed the cougar with a (i callem roach clips but) foresnips....Horses are big! imagine a wild cat mauling a person on a horse!!
I also think they are the most beautiful cat on the planet, second of course is the tiger(siberian)
Also, it is said that walking down trails . ...The Cats see you, you dont see them. In a news paper 7 or so years ago, they said that for every 3 times you go for a walk in Parksville BC trail, a cat is eyeing you up once! No kidding, Your not supposed to let your children walk to school on there own!
Aparrently Cougars and Sharks Snuggle when noone is peaking ;)

    Well, it wasn't mine. ;)

Back on topic briefly, it's ironic to note that more people die from eating sharks (food poisoning) than die from getting eaten by them.

Despite Australia's reputation, the amount of spider and snake fatalities from bites in the last 25 years is close to nil. (Since anti-venom has been available).

    http://www.sydney100.com/snakes-spiders-sharks.htm

Seems more people die from bee stings, than snakes.

Well you guys should hear about Idaho. I'm a city gal that got moved onto a 320 acre cattle ranch next to the desert foothills. Coyotes were every where and our dogs had to stay in the house at night because of them. A mountain lion was shot a mile from our house. My dog was bitten by a rattlesnake. Sixty Hobo spiders invaded the house but we caught them on sticky traps. On my nightly check of the traps I found a snake stuck on one behind the sofa. And one day I swear I saw a wolf and I was just hoping I could get in the house in time.

    wanna hear something funny?

well actually its not at all funny but ill tell ya's anyway, after all those conversations on how its like a million to 1 chance of being attacked by a shark we here in Australia have had 17 reported attacks (plenty more that havent been reported)
with 14 deaths and thats just been the past 60day(2mths)
so here in oz its deffently not a million to 1 chance, thats for sure, yes i agree there is deffently more worse off dangers out there and yes you have more chance dying well driving to the beach but there is still the danger of them sharks.

Funny Story.....I was body surfin' in San Diego, in the early '70's, just after after I had read Jaws. I was on a good wave and out of the corner of my eye I could see something fairly big and non-human on the wave with me. I rode the wave all the way in, bailed, and came running out of the water, looking over my shoulder. :hyperMy friends were laughing and cracking up as I came up to them yelling, "Did you see that?". I couldn't figure out what was funny about riding a wave with one of the Denizens of the Deep. Then one of them said, "Did you saw that seal riding the wave next to you?" End of Story
