Interesting stuff Bazza, as me and Chaslang are chatting over the very same topic, but with a different poll from Secunia

    http://secunia.com/secunia_polls/?poll_id=8

completly differing results to the poll from Codeprojects, but multiple polls will have differening results, just depends what the readers of said website have a preference for.

You already know my answer to that question.

Boy, Microsoft wouldn't be happy with that poll, Halo.:cry

Nearly 80% of respondents are not going to install Vista within 12 months, or NEVER going to install Vista.

I like my listed poll better. :D :D Bazza

Some are too hung up on this eye candy issue..... Vista if you wish allows you to go back to W2K look if you wish!

polls are polls every one is different in the areas they are aimed at, pop a poll in a linux forum and Vista will loose, pop a poll in a MS forum and vista will do ok.... polls are a waste of space, many take too much as gospel from polls, time to make up your own mind and actually try it????

If you dont think your going to like Vista... hey easy... DONT USE IT stick with XP as its fine.

But I heard all this back in the early days of XP... same old same old rolleyes

Xp is matured and great .... Vista is different, if you try it you may like it, if you try it for a few months then decide if you dont like it and give an honest own reason why, but sadly many listen to the FUD thats posted about it and think hey I'll be part of this I hate group because its the in thing to do... why not make your own mind up.. dont be part of the flock!!!

Well, I'm getting closer to buying Vista, not that I need it as XP works great, but I'd like to use Vista more and I can learn something new as I can't get my head around *nix as hard as I try. The only command I remember is -rpm blah blah. One nice thing I found today is a simple, and I mean simple, driver for my HP 3600 series Scanjet so I don't have to reboot to XP to do a photo or document scan. Integrates nicely with Vistas' Photo Gallery. Thanks HP and I hope printer drivers are on the way soon, though I think I'll be dual booting with XP for quite a while yet.

I think thats the main thing Augie, you are in the groove in knowing that Vista is not needed as Xp is fine, but you also know that Vista offers some other useful user options and usability that XP doesnt.

You have no drivers yet for your printer, I was damm suprised to find my HP printer drivers on the DVD as standard.

I'm not holding my breath for printer drivers as I have a cheap Deskjet D2360 but I'm still elated that HP finally put out a simple driver so that my scanner works in a limited fashion. That's what many people have been clamoring for, give us some basic functionality and when it's time, we'll upgrade our peripherals. Of course, I'm only speaking as a home user.

    Linux for life.

I love getting people worked up. :)

Vista does look nice, but until I can afford Office 2007 to go with it, Im not even remotely interested.

If I get the same functionality as I have currently in XP, then I'll switch. The only thing in Vista so far that has blown me away is the search function! I guess I'll have to wait for the DX10 goodies to prove themselves in a year or two. Oh, I don't need the security but I'm sure normal users would like it, unless they're click happy.

For a quick search in XP, try Agent Ransack. (not available at MG).

Agent Ransack version 1.7.3 (build 332) is the current official release and can be downloaded from this site: (approx. 792 KB). Download Agent Ransack
    http://www.mythicsoft.com/agentransack/download.aspx

It is light (speed) years ahead of the MS XP search, but has a missing feature or 2.

For example, if you sort to ascending file size, you then cannot sort it to descending file size. Not a biggie, but something to note.

I use it whenever I need to search, instead of the XP version.:cool

Been using Ransack for quite a while though it doesn't even come close to Vistas engine as it doesn't index the drives for really fast (instantaneous) searches. It's way faster than waiting for the MS doggie to poop out the answer though.:)

When will I upgrade to Vista??? I probably won't unless it's ABSOLUTELY necessary!!! But if I was going to go for it, I'd wait at least 6-8 months to allow for some of the bugs and kinks to get worked out. I remember when XP first came out and the problems associated with it at first.... it took MS about a year to really stabilize it....

wait a year or 2 if considering purchasing vista, I mean when Duo core comes out (4 core) , dual core will be 3 times cheaper vista will be cheaper with all the bugs fixed , Stuff the HyPe , buy a Mac

Its always the same with computers,
there is always something new around the corner, leading to price drops of current technology.
When it comes down to it you generally have to upgrade at some stage.
It is of course up to the individual as to how often they upgrade.
I had windows ME and was happy with it
Now I have XP and am happy with it as well.
It will depend largely on how soon Vista is superseded as to whether I end up buying it or holding out for the next one.

As to the price, if you buy any new technology it is going to cost you more than it is probably worth.
For most of us it makes more sense to stay at least one step behind.
The truly Geeky will always want to be on the cutting edge.

I have Home Premium on both my notebook and Desktop. The only reason being I was able to get it cheap as a student. Otherwise I would have waited a year or until I built a new Desktop. I poked around in the Betas for a while and I really got used to it and I like the added features. Especially the new Media Center. Works great with my 360! If you are building a new computer and have the option of getting it, I'd say go for it. Otherwise, just wait until you need it, or when you want a new toy to play with. :)

I'm perfectly happy with XP pro for now . . . it meets all of my needs and then some. Since MS is going to keep supporting it for a good while longer, I don't feel any pressure to upgrade to Vista right away.

Now having said that . . . If I should build another new PC, it makes sense to put Vista on it at the outset.

DX10 seems to be the main aspect, especially for gamers. By the time I get a DX10 GPU Vienna will probably be out (if it's released as reported in 2009, but I say 2011-2012 at their rate). I can get Business for free from MSDNAA, but I want the media center. Other than that, never until apps require it.

I would agree with you, even though I've been playing with Vista/Longhorn since 4015 and I like it. I want it but I don't need it. Like others have said, wait for a year and see what happens. XP is good enough for me even though I built this AMD64 system for Vista. Oh well, it's a good rig for XPP as it is.:)

Vista strikes me as the worst piece of bloatware yet. Of course, you can get the Basic version, but still... Linux is looking better all the time, I'm downloading Knoppix to start learning it.

So my answer is, when and if I have no choice.

Refer to my sig in terms of bloat and Linux. Unless you go with an advanced distro, you will see bloat, in many cases, more bloat than Windows.

I'm not installing Linux, I'm going to run a live Knoppix CD. Looking over the list of software packages included, I could see that there's a lot that I don't need, but at least it won't be taking up space on my HD.
