Friend who wants to use my XP disc???

I have a friend who has an emachine that is giving him a error message. He does not have a XP boot disc and wants to use my XP disc to reinstall windows.

Will microsoft activation work? Will this effect me if I need to reinstall windows on my pc?

I have sorted out a couple of e-machines and from what I can remember they have a hidden partition with which you can restore and reload the system, either completely or just the operating files.

I would suggest that some time spent on Google would save a lot of heartache.

If the disk is the same version as to retail or OEM or home/pro, I don't see a problem if he uses his own key. Don't give him your key as that would kill your activation when you'ld go to updates etc.

EDIT: scousetechie is right, don't forget that the restore will wipe everything that he has on the disk. Should only be done as a last resort if he doesn't have back ups. First thing to do is google the error message and start from there.

On the back of most EMachines there's a Microsoft Windows XP Product Key sticker. Check it and see if it's for Home Edition (95% of 'em are). If your CD is the Home Edition, and NOT an OEM from Dell, or Gateway, your friend can use the CD as long as he uses the key from the sticker on his EMachine. DO NOT GIVE YOUR KEY TO ANYBODY! EVER!!!
