Hello there to all you computer geniuses. I have a little question that I hope that someone can answer. I recently received another computer and I am using the internet on both. The safety issue that I have is, Is it safe for me to run my Ethernet cable on my primary PC and my USB connection on my secondary PC using the same ADSL Modem? Also, what cable do I need to network both my computers where my secondary PC can share files and other extremities from my Primary PC?

    Thanks to all that help.

I'm sorry, I'm not sure I understand you...
Are you asking whether you can connect both machines to the same modem at one time?

If so, I wouldn't expect the internet to work correctly.

What you need is a router. This will let you share internet among your computers. They would, however, both need to be connected to the router via ethernet.

The content of the following links will provide you with a basic tutorial about Sharing Internet and using Wire & Wireless; it is short and to the point. Few of the pages were written ages ago. Ignore the prices, and the specific choice of hardware, stick with the principles, they are still the same.

Thanks to those that have helped me. What I am saying is, I have 2 computers, and 1 ADSL Modem. I am connected to 1 computer using Ethernet and the other, USB. As you know, an ADSL modem has 2 connections on the back, other than the phone line and power supply. I am connected to one computer via Ethernet and the other computer via USB. The internet seems to be working good for now for both computers but I just would like to know if it's safe and if it won't damage my ADSL modem. I am going to purchase an Ethernet router within the next few weeks.

    Thanks for the support.

i'm surprised it works at all connected that way. i suppose i would go to the modem manufacturer's website and check to see if there are objections listed to connecting 2 pcs the way you have them.

as far as sharing data.. i'd go with the router/hub and ethernet cable, if your computers are that close to each other.. if you plan on moving them.. consider wireless.

Yes it may work, but no ones gonna support it configured that way as its not in "spec". But definitly you should get a router or some other type of routing device. Much safer/relible connection if you do.
