I have Knoppix and Windows XP in dual boot and it's doing fine... until I installed another HDD 250Gb that (I think) caused this error... At this point, GRUB doesn't load anymore so I cannot boot either linux Knoppix or Windows. Is there a way to override GRUB so that I can reboot on Windows? Any help would be very much appreciated... Thanks in advance!

Your drive assignments changed, most likely. Thats what threw Grub off.

You could try putting in the XP CD, reboot, when it says Press key to boot to CD, ignore it. It will use the bootsector off the CD to boot.

May not work though, which means to bypass Grub, you either gotta fix it, or remove it.

Booting to XP recovery console and using fixmbr will remove it from the MBR.

The only trouble with that is you will lose the ability to boot linux.

How many hard drives are in the pc?
did you move the one that had windows on it (ie from master to slave or from primary to secondary ide)?

Is linux on another partition on the same hard drive with windows?

Every thing is still there and it is possible to repair grub.

    Reinstall grub. :)

My response was in direct reply to the seemingly only concern of booting Windows.

    Thanks for the reply guys...

I think this caused the problem.
Before I have read your replies, I already did some actions.
Since I really need to use my PC... I decided to boot to recovery console and do fixmbr. (like what Adrynalyne said) It worked. I have booted windows. But it also made my linux unbootable :( (GaryG was right) what I did was repartition the HD and re-install OS. :cry too late for me...

anyway... thanks for the replies... I'll surely learn a lot from this forum.

    more power to you guys.

sorry, Adrynalyn, did not mean any disrespect; but if that is his only linux install, then he cannot re-install grub without reinstalling linux, or getting one of the live-cd recovery disks.

I didnt take it as disrespect.

Grub being easy to reinstall is dependent on the distro.

Me, I grab my Arch CD, I boot to setup, I reinstall grub without it ever touching another file of my distro.

Nonetheless, Windows was the concern that I read, and I answered accordingly.

Take a look, it gives instructions on how to reinstall Grub.
