    Hello Everyone at Major Geeks!
This is my first time posting. I am having problems with my computer. Besides being suddenly slow, it is also not responding at times, and clicking on internet links often just doesn't work. I have Norton Internet Security enabled all the time, but it seems that things have taken a turn for the worse. One particularly annoying problem is the audible click noise that is supposed to happen only once when I click on something. Lately it has been clicking like crazy--up to 5 or 6 times per one push of the button. Anyhow.....
Here is what I have done so far. Downloaded and updated and unzipped everything as specified in the READ ME FIRST. Followed steps 0-7 according to directions with no problems. So now I will be attaching Counterspy, Bitdefender, and Panda Logs to this post, and Getrunkey, Shownew, and Hijackthis to the next post. I hope I am following all instructions to the letter, because I am trying really hard!!!
Thanks in advance for any help that you can give me. I am living in Germany, so please forgive if I am not quick to respond- crazy European time zone and all.
    Thank You!

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!
Your problems may not be malware related. Note you forgot to attach you CounterSpy log but I doubt it found anything too important.
I see you recently installed OfficeUpdate12 and Symantec. Did your PC get slower after this?

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03

Make sure you reboot after uninstalling the above!

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Okay now uninstall the Sunbelt CounterSpy trial since we are finished with it now! Then delete the below two folders left behind by the uninstall:
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sunbelt Software
    C:\Program Files\Sunbelt Software

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program does not require an installation. The executable actually runs the program.

NOTE: This program is for Windows XP and Windows 2000 only. ATF Cleaner will remove all files from the items that are checked so if you have some cookies you'd like to save. Please move them to a different directory first.
    • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    • Under Main choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
    If you use Firefox browser
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
    If you use Opera browser
    • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main ATF Cleaner menu to close the program.

Let's fix a few non-malware related items wasting system resources.
Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Reminder] "C:\Windows\Creator\Remind_XP.exe"
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    O4 - Global Startup: Updates from HP.lnk = C:\Program Files\Updates from HP\309731\Program\Updates from HP.exe

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Are you still having problems with your PC being slow? If so, try uninstalling all of the Symantec/Norton software and tell me how things are working.

    Thanks chaslang!
I did everything that you said short of uninstalling Norton, and the speed of my computer seems to be back to where it was. The only problem that I am still having is the double and triple clicking when I click on a link. If you don't think this is a problem, though, I won't worry about it anymore!
About a month ago I restarted my computer and for whatever reason had to do a system restore, but things were fine for a week or two after that. I had only noticed the slowing more recently.
Again, I thank you for your help!

More than likely not malware. More likely a setting related to your browser or possibly due to a software update.

Yes but as I said in my last message, you recently installed:

OfficeUpdate12 and Symantec. Did your PC get slower after this?
