My girlfriend was using my computer and when I got home, my computer had been hijacked... this message comes up when I try to run anything

"This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system adminstrator."

my desktop has been minimized to a few icons, my start menu is also missing a few items.

someone please shed some light on this, I can't run spybot and avg software.

    Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

Was your account setup with Administrator priviledges before? Is it still an Admin account? Are you sure you are logged into your account and not a restricted account.

Can you boot in safe mode and logon to the real user account name Administrator? How does it work? If Okay, use it to checkout the permissions on your account.

Also take a look at this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/278839

I still log in as administrator, but as windows is booting up, the first message I get is "operation cancelled due to..." and then only 30 or so processes are running, can't run any apps without it telling me "operation cancelled due to..." No start menu either. I know there's a particular process that you guys want done before sending a post, but can't run anything, so can't produce logfiles.

    I guess I'm screwed...

Please address the rest of my questions and did you look at the links I gave?

Saying you log in as administrator is confusing. The administator account is only available in safe boot mode (I'm assuming you have Win XP since you never even told us your OS). Other accounts can be made to have administrator priviledges but the user account names will be different. And these other accounts will show in both safe mode and normal boot mode.

Thanks for replying to my post. Sorry I can't be more concise, it's a little frustrating with both of my computers infected now. I have no running system at my house, I have to use a friend's system.

I'm running win2k, I log in everyday as "administrator." I will try safe mode when I get home. But this one is pretty severe, I used to clean computers of spyware and malware, but this one is pretty crazy. It has completely taken over my permissions and changing my start menu. Can't close any windows without getting the same message.

Hope this helps, i'll be back with more info.

    Thanks in advance,
    Francis

Okay check out the links I gave you for useful information and then also let me know if you can run anything in safe mode.

If you cannot run ANYTHING at all, there is not much we can do for you. Thus you will have to make sure that you really mean that you cannot run anything. Normal procedures would be to run the below or as least as much of it as is possible. The more you run and the more logs you get us the better.

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, renaming, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.

    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
      • CounterSpy
      • AVG Antispyware log - ONLY IF NEEDED you were not able to run CounterSpy
      • Bitdefender - from step 6
      • Panda Scan - from step 6
      • runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
      • newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
      • HijackThis
NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!
